this is my code in php:

<?php echo "Hi!"; ?>

this is my code in javascript:

alert(xmlhttp.responseText);

now, my problem is that the output displays: "1Hi!";
even though i will not display an output in php, still a "1" appends in the beginning of the alert box.

What could be the problem?
