Hi
I have been having serious problems trying to get rid of the win32.netsky virus.. My task manager is disabled and I cant use my restore function.. I keep getting warnings of the virus when I boot up and pop up windows when I try and use the internet! I cant seem to use run function and my anti virus isnt picking anything up.
I'm not the brightest tool when it comes to the computer but I reckon I can follow instructions if anybody would be kind enough to gimme some.
Please help this desperate woman!! :'(

Thanks x

Hi and welcome to daniweb,
First of all do this:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Reboot the computer.

Next download and run a System Scan with HiJackThis. Save the log and post back here with the MBA-M log and the HJT log.
Judy

Ok I have been trying to upload the logs for ages and cant seem to get it...I am assuming I use the attachment function!?? if thats the way i'm supposed to do it then I browse find the file and upload..one file is saying upload error and the other is saying invalid file..Is it the way I have saved them is the problem?

See told ya I wasnt the sharpest!

Open the logs. Go up to Edit, Select All. Then the log should be in highlight. Go to Edit, Copy.
Then open a new reply here, place the cursor in the reply box, Right Click with your mouse and choose Paste. The log will be pasted here.

Thanks again Judy you taking time to help me with this is much appreciated :)

Wow! Lot's more found than just the worm.win32.netsky!
Think you better do at least one more scan before I give any more instructions regarding your HJT log.
Please do this:
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.
Reboot the computer and run one more HJT scan. Post back with the ESET log and the new HJT log. You are doing great!
Judy

here we go ..Hope this is done right

here we go ..Hope this is done right

You are doing a great job and have done everything right. Now since many more infections were found and removed with the ESET Scanner I think it is time to "bring out a big gun"

You may want to print these steps out just to be certain you know what to expect and also you won't be able to have internet access during part of the running of this next tool.
You can find these instructions with pictures at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Here are the instructions simplified.
Download Combofix

You will get a prompt asking if you want to run or save the file. Choose SAVE and save it to the desk top. DO NOT RUN it YET
You must take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

* Close all open Windows including this one.
* Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix.

Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.
Windows may issue a prompt because ComboFix does not have a digital signature. This is perfectly normal and safe and you can click on the Run button to continue.
ComboFix is now preparing to run and when it has finished you will see the Disclaimer screen you should press the number 1 key and then press the enter key to continue.
ComboFix will create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry.
Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will disconnect your computer from the Internet. Therefore, do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet as your connection will be completely restored at a later stage in the program.

ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to what they were previously. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan.

When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report
This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically
You should now post this log here when all is complete.

This log will be very long. Simply copy/paste it as you have done with the others and post it here.
Again I say, you are doing very well. We ARE going to get this computer cleaned up!!!
Judy

Hey Judy I think I followed all the instructions properly until I came to getting the log it all seemed ok but its gone! I tried tying in C:\ComboFix.txt but it said windows did not find the file and to check if I had spelt it right or do a search for the file..so just searching for combofix.txt ....

Just double click My Computer. When that opens Double Click "C" drive. When that opens scroll through all you see there. It should be there. Remember, after all the Folder icons, the last one you see will likely be Windows, then you will probably see .DLL icons, then someplace near the top of the list you will see a TEXT Icon named ComboFix. Take a look at my attachments to see what they look like.
When you find that combofix double click to open it up. It will be in Notepad very likely. Go to Edit, Select All, Copy.
Then come back here and paste.
Take a look at my attachments.

Hey Judy..11 hours later and i'm still searching so I thing I may have gone wrong somewhere!
Now I am getting an error report from Microsoft about a blue screen warning..u said my screen would go funny but as u said it would go back to normal, and it did ..not sure if you need to see this but gonna post it and let u see it anyway

Blue screen error caused by a device or driver
You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.

The following troubleshooting steps might prevent the blue screen error from recurring. Try them in the order given. If one step does not solve the problem, then move on to the next one.

Steps to solve this problem
Download and install the latest updates and device drivers for your computer

Use Windows Update to check for and install updates:

Click to go online to the Windows Update website.

Note
If Microsoft Update is installed, you'll be taken to the Microsoft Update website.

Click Custom to check for available updates.

In the left pane, under Select by Type, click each of the following links to view all available updates:

High Priority

Software, Optional

Hardware, Optional

Select the updates you want, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Updates.

If you recently added a new hardware device to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if a driver update is available.

How do I find my computer manufacturer?

Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32, and then click OK. Your computer manufacturer is listed as the System Manufacturer in the right pane of the System Information window.

Click to go online to see contact information for most computer manufacturers
If you recently added a new program to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if an update is available.

Scan your computer for viruses

Many blue screen errors can be caused by computer viruses or other types of malicious software.

If you have an antivirus program installed on your computer, make sure it is up to date with the latest antivirus definitions and perform a complete scan of your system. Check your antivirus product's website for information on getting the latest updates.

If you do not have antivirus software installed on your computer, we recommend using a web-based scanner to check your computer for malware. Many of the top antivirus software providers offer this service free of charge on their websites.

To see a list of Microsoft and third-party providers of antispyware, anti-malware, and antivirus software, go online to the following website:

Security software: Downloads and trials
To see a list of antivirus software vendors, go online to the following Knowledge Base article:

List of antivirus software vendors
Tip
Consider scanning your computer using more than one web-based antivirus scanner, even if you have an antivirus program installed on your computer. This will help make sure that you are using the most up-to-date antivirus definitions and allows you to benefit from the different strengths of each antivirus software manufacturer. If you do run multiple antivirus products, make sure you run only one product at a time. Running multiple antivirus products simultaneously can produce incorrect results.

Check your hard disk for errors

You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.

Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Click Start.

Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this might take several minutes or longer. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

Note
If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

For more information, go online to read the following article:

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Steps to work around this problem
Warning
These steps are designed to address a particular problem but might do so by temporarily disabling or removing some functionality on your computer.

Remove any new hardware or software to isolate the cause of the blue screen

If you received the blue screen error after adding a new hardware device or program, and downloading updates didn't solve the problem, try removing the device or program and restarting Windows. If removing the new device or program allows Windows to start without the error, contact the device or program's manufacturer to get product updates or to learn about any known issues with the device or program.

Restore your computer to an earlier state

If the blue screen error occurred after installing a system or program update, consider using the System Restore feature to remove the changes. System Restore uses "restore points" that have been saved on your computer to return your system to a point in time before the problem began. This won't fix the problem, but it can make your computer work again.

Do one of the following:

If Windows doesn't start:

Restart the computer and, when the screen becomes blank during startup, repeatedly press F8 until the Windows Advanced Options Menu displays.

Use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and then press ENTER.

For more information about safe mode start up options, go online to read an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Click to read KB315222
If you are prompted to select a version of Windows, select the correct version, and then press ENTER.

Log on to the computer using the Administrator account or an account that has administrator credentials.

Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

[systemroot]\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

(Where [systemroot] is the drive and directory where your Windows system files are located -- for example, "C:\Windows")

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore the computer to an earlier state.

Or, if Windows starts:

Log on to Windows using an administrator account.

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

On the Welcome to System Restore page, select Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.

On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. You might receive a message that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Review this list, and then click OK.

On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows configuration, and then restarts the computer.

Log on to the computer as an administrator.

When the System Restore Restoration Complete page appears, click OK.

Not sure if I should do as the microsoft report says or run combofix again and see if it gives me a log report next time , so I think until I hear from you I will hold fire and do nothing

Thanks again
lisa

ooops I keep forgetting the newest post is on the top and I posted mine before I seen yours...I looked in all the files u mentioned and the only one I could find I will attach to this reply (hopefully) when I clicked on it it took me back to my "my computer" where I had just been ..I left the room last nt when I was doing the combofix and made a coffee so maybe there was a problem with it I didnt see so I think I should do it again and then I will see for myself what is happening
Lisa

ok... I closed any internet programmes, disabled my firewall and anti virus and clicked on combofix
It said there was a new version and did I want to update so I clicked yes ..it updated and then the scan started
it checked stages 1 -> 50
then it rebooted the pc..my screen or clock didnt change during any of this nor was there any mention of a log report .Tho I did get another error report like the last one about a blue screen that said " the system has recovered from a serious error"
clicked send error report and set off to search for the log file...
Tried all the things I did last night and looked for your icons but there is still only the desktop icon called combofix that takes me back to my computer page...
I dont know what i'm doing wrong..
Bet i'm giving u a headache!
I think I know now why in olden days they used carrier pigeon, lot less hassel than computers and u only had to feed them and chuck them out a window ~ actually chucking the pc out the window at the min sounds like a promising idea :D
but anyway gonna stop doing anything until I hear from you incase I make something worse
Lisa

Did you put combofix on your desktop as originally noted? I have not seen it in a folder before as your attachment shows.
Did you open that combofix folder and see what is in it?

Have not seen this before but suppose it possible this Combofix file is hidden.
Do the following:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Now look for that combofix txt. file.

Hi, Yes I did put the Combofix on my desktop and yes I did look in the file and it automatically put me back to "my computer" page .. I cant see the file anywhere..run wont find it just gives me an error message and search cant find it so I dunno it must be me.
I thought maybe it was the way I downloaded the ComboFix so I thought uninstalling it and installing it again might help so I looked in my add remove programmes and its not there.is that right? I just assumed it should be.
The only File I can see thats different is Qoobox..I'm going to try and save them all on one screen for you to see
I did as your last instructions about unhiding the files and nothing different with combofix in it showed up
Lisa

Qoobox is combofix Quarantine file we don't want that right now. Don't worry about uninstalling combofix, that has to be done a specific way and I will give instructions for that later.
Forget about looking for the log for now.
Update MBA-M and do another Full Scan with it. Have it REMOVE all found.
Reboot. Come back and post that new MBA-M log.

Here is the log..Thanks again Judy for all your help

Looks much better, just a few more steps. Your Java is way out of date and needs to be updated.
Please go HERE and download the Offline Install. Save it to your desk top for easy access but DON'T run it yet.
Once it is downloaded then close all browsers. Go to Add/Remove and Uninstall ALL older versions of Java you find there. Once all are uninstalled then double click that Java install file on the desk top and install the new version, be sure to watch the install boxes, occasionally they will give you something else along with it, like a yahoo toolbar or something like that. If you see anything extra with a check mark in a box next to it, take that check mark out and then continue. When the install is complete then go back to the download page and on the right side you will see Verify Now. Click that to go to the verification page to see for sure if the installation was completed.
Once that happens then run a new HJT and post back with the log and we should have only a couple more steps.
Judy

There we go....

Sorry forgot to say in last post after installing java I went to the download page and verified it was downloaded correctly and then went to the virtual checking page and it said "java is working"
Thank you
Lisa

Looking pretty good, just a few more fixes needed.
First of all go to Start, Control Panel, Admininstrative Tools, Services.
When that opens the list is in alphabetical order so scroll through until you find these:
FsUsbExService
PLFlash DeviceIoControl Service

Double click one at a time on each one. This will open the properties box of that service. First click the Stop button if it shows, this will stop the service. Once the service is stopped then click the Start Up type and change it to Disabled.

Do that for both services, they are definitely unneeded.
Reboot.
Run HiJackThis once more and put check marks next to the following entries if they remain:

O23 - Service: FsUsbExService - Teruten - C:\WINDOWS\system32\FsUsbExService.Exe
O23 - Service: PLFlash DeviceIoControl Service - Prolific Technology Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\IoctlSvc.exe

Once you have placed those check marks then click the Fix Checked button. Exit HJT.

Then download this program, Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel to the desk top. Double click to run it. If you cannot find it after you run it then look in the Control Panel. There should be a little computer icon labeled Startup.
Open it.
Go through the various tabs there and remove the check marks next to these items, they are unnecessary auto starting programs and all can be run manually if needed rather than run all the time in the back ground:
Openwares LiveUpdate
Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
SecurDisc
NeroFilterCheck
NBKeyScan
QuickTime Task
SunJavaUpdateSched
Once you have removed the check marks, close the program, reboot the computer.
Next download SpywareBlaster, a MUST HAVE program to add another layer of protection to the computer.
Download to the desktop for easy access. Double click the install file and install SpywareBlaster. Open the program, check for updates, it will install any updates found. Then Enable All protection, including Restricted Sites and close the program. Manually check for updates every week or so. It doesn't update often but provides superb protection without running in the back ground.
Once you have done all that then reboot once more and run one more HJT scan and post that new log.
I will give you the last two, simple steps.
Judy

These 2 I didnt see on the list to put check marks at them

You need to begin your own thread, stating the steps you have taken and posting the HJT log in YOUR own thread.

Looks good Lisa, now just these last steps.

You should remove HiJackThis, you don't need it any more.
You also should uninstall combofix. It basically is a "one time" fix. If a person is told to use it again some other time then a new copy would be needed.

* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. The space between the combofix and the /u, it must be there.
When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

You also need to set a new, clean Restore point.
To do this Right Click My computer.
Choose Properties
When System Properties opens choose the System Restore Tab.
Place a check mark in Shut down System Restore.
You will probably get a message telling you it will be shut down, click ok or yes.
Allow it to shut down.
Wait a moment. Then go back in and take that check mark Out so that System Restore will turn back on.
If you believe all is ok then this one is solved.
