I have a laptop with an integrated Intel Wireless G network card that once worked flawlessly with my Linksys 802.11G router. Now all of a sudden, I can connect to the router (I know this because when I run IPCONFIG it shows the correct default gateway of 192.168.2.1 and it assigns an IP address to the laptop) but am unable to PING or browse any websites whatsoever. I suspect that it has something to do with a windows DNS problem but have no idea how to fix it. Even if I hardwire the PC to the router I still have the exact same problem. Get an IP, but no browsing capabilities. I’m stumped.

Thank you

Jason

Was the router unpluuged for over a period of 2 minutes? To were it may have lost all configuration? That happened to me, so i had to reset all the SSID etc, and re allocate all the data. Took me about 3.2 minutes to do, lol. Im hardwired now, im sick of wireless.

Well, there are other computers on the wireless network that still work just fine, and the fact that the wireless laptop is receiving a IP address would indicate that the router is functioning correctly no? I seem to think its a Windows problem but I will certainly try that. Any other possibilities?

Tried, it, still same problem. It was just too weird because one second it worked, and not of course, there is nothing, Once again, there is an IP address being given to me by the router 192.168.2.1 but I can not browse the internet or ping anything, even the router?? What is going on here.

192.168.2.1, is default to log in to the router or monitor a net work. The ip must be released and reset. Also is your PC recieving pockets?
Im not on windows atm, so if you dont mind could you please run cmd from the start>RUN button, then type in ipconfig/all then copy and paste the info to me, so i can give it an thurough look, as well as the rest of the board.

Im sorry, your right, that is the IP for the router, the IP the machine was receiving was something like 192.168.2.105, my error. The laptop is a clients machine that I do not have my hands on at the moment. All I can say is that when I did an ipconfig /all on the machine I received that IP address from the router and it had 192.168.2.1 as the default gateway. I also tried ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renewal, and ipconfig /flushdns and then restarted, same problem.

Thanks alot,

Jason

ya i was looking to see if you had a default gateway, and im sure you have DHCP to automatically hand you an IP address. Do you think maybe your connection is too slow for how many devices you are running off it, as you said you have multiple PC's connected, whats your connection speed. For a router its recommened to use 3mb, or more. I use less thent hat becasue i pay for it my self, and well i am not made of cash.

Hey Jason, was reading your post with some interest as I am planning on getting a WiFi Router in the near future. What was your solution? Could you post it for us here.

Have been reading allot about DHCP problems between PC's and Linksys Router/Firewalls (had to fix a roommates problem with a hardwired connection). Was hoping that this would not be the issue.

For my roommates hardwired laptop, we replaced the ethernet cable (I was surprised that this fixed the problem), obviously with WiFi, replacing a cable would not do it, lol.

It is so wierd that I have the same problem a year after you were talking about it!! I just posted a thread yesterday regarding the same issue.

One additional thing that I observed was I am able to browse the internet in safe mode. I am just drained trying to figure out what the problem is!! Any help?

easy way, check them,
did you get dns address in ipconfig /all?
if it is, nslookup in command line
type microsoft.com under nslookup
if you get ip address of the web, copy one of the ip to address bar of your browser and enter
web page comes?
which step stops you? you may locat where is the problem.

I haven't tried the NSLOOKUP but I tried known IP addresses. Nothing worked. Anyway, I viped the OS and re-installed XP on it. Obviously, that fixed it. As much as I hated to do that, I had to.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I am having this exact same problem, but I am not using a router, but a cable modem. I can connect online with an old computer from 1998 with the same modem, but i cannot connect online with the brand new one, running XP Pro. I am getting high pings, and I was able to repair my LAN connection, but I still cannot actually get online because the connection is less than 100mbs.

I have scanned my computer for viruses and nothing has been found either.

I also couldn't flush the dns, but was finally able to do so, and still nothing. does anyone have any ideas???

I have airtell broadband connection, before a week i can access without ip address (automatic) but during a week it required ip address to connect internet,, I have a lan and wireless connection , where is problem i don't know

After reading all the post here. I think it could be your wireless card driver is corrupted or the card may be faulty. Unplug your wifi card and try the USB wifi adapter instead and see how it goes.

Hello, touch. If you can connect when you enter an IP then you have a DNS resolution problem. I could go through it with you, but this link explains it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305553

well, usually when I have this type of problem I reset the router. If that does not work I power cycle the modem and router. This just means unplugging the router and modem. Then I plug in the modem. Wait about 30 seconds, then I plug in the router. Usually these two things resolve the issue...

Hi, I had the same problem. Judging from your IP Jason, you're a Comcast customer too? Maybe not, but maybe so. Anyways, I had the same problem, started about Tuesday of last week. After trying to fix it myself but to no avail, I did most of the same things listed here but not all of them, I finally gave up and called Comcast customer support to see if they could fix it over the phone. Nope, ended up having to get a technician out to my house the following Tuesday as that was their earliest open appointment.

The technician couldn't figure out what it was either. He had me check all of my settings and every thing and noticed that I had an ip, gateway, and all of that stuff and my computer said that I was connected. I was hardlined to my router so it definitely wasn't something with the wireless.

He checked the signal coming from the cable and noticed that there wasn't any signal coming from the cable and figured it was probably a bad splitter (I have my cable from the wall going to a splitter, and after that one to my tv, and the other to my modem). He replaced the splitter but that didn't work either.

We ended up trying to install another router and modem, which the new router did the same thing. Soooooo, he tried another router and it worked. I must say that I'm not entirely satisfied with it considering the fact that I expect the problem to arise again in the future and wish to be prepared for it instead of just having to wait a week for a technician to come to my house to simply do a trial and error thing with different routers each time.

I'd also love to know of any fixes, for future reference.

Thanks and thumbs up in advance to any tech/networking-savy personnel that figure this out.

o The initiative taken for the concern is very serious and need an

attention of every one. This is the concern which exists in the

society and needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as

possible.

Thank you

Jason

It just happened to me again. It has to be something with the ISP's domain. I noticed that when I went into my router settings and checked the status of it there wasn't a domain name (ex:hsd1.state.ISPcompanyname.net.) thingy. I tried messing with some things but again, no dice.

I tried releasing and renewing the IP as it had been suggested earlier, didn't work. I tried running cmd and pinging various websites such as google, youtube, yahoo, etc. It only came back with the message that the servers could not be found and to make sure that I didn't misspell anything.

Then out of nowhere it started working again. This is rather irritating and I'm hoping that I can get this resolved, if I do I'll gladly post my/Comcast's resolution.

Ultimately, my guess is that there's a problem with the company's domain in this area, we are rather rural I suppose... Even so, I've never had this problem before last week.

Sorry if it seems like I'm double posting, I would've simply edited my previous post but I didn't see an edit/modify button. If there is one, someone please point me in the right direction? = )

Cz, would you mind running this for us:
==download hijackthis: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html
-copy it to a new FOLDER placed either alongside your program files or on your desktop and then...
-in that folder start HijackThis by dclicking the .exe
-CLOSE ALL OTHER APPLICATIONS and any open windows including the explorer window containing HijackThis.
-click the Scan and Save a Logfile button. Post the log here.

Will do. Sorry for the late reply. I've been trying some things with my techsavvy friend over in California (See? East and West Coast people can get along!). Anyway, we've determined that it's not a virus, it's not a broken modem or router, it's not my computer, and it's not a driver failure, or my computer being hacked or anything of that sort. But I will try the hijack this thing. I'll have two reports, one for when it is working and one for when it isn't working.

Oh, and it usually only happens during the early morning and throughout the evening/1-2AM. It does happen during the regular day but no where near as often. In fact I had to reset my modem about 30 minutes ago. My friend and I both think that it's my former suspicion, that Comcast isn't supplying enough bandwidth for the general area that I am in. I'm in the process of asking my surrounding neighbors if they have Comcast/Xfinity and whether or not they're having similar issues.

Okay. And what is the IP address that you get... run ipconfig /all to see it, both when good and when bad. It should be one supplied by the router.

Here's a logfile when it's working.

I'll try and post another when it isn't working, probably won't be until tomorrow though. Ionno, I might be able to manage it after my connection starts going haywire.

Here's a log and the same ip stuff when it isn't working.

I tried to play a version of Halo for the PC last night and even when the internet connection was working for my web browser, I'd still get a "d/c box" or disconnected box almost every 2 seconds, like clock work (No I wasn't trying to do both at the same time as I know that it will cause similar issues). This made the game unplayable but I felt that it might be useful information due to the fact that it was consistent throughout the entire session. Another thing that doesn't make sense to me is that the HiJack This log didn't scan Google Chrome which is the web browser that I use. Yes, I have IE8 but I don't like IE and hence don't use it. Is there any way to get it to scan Chrome?

There are a few problems there that need to be removed first. Lets try this... firstly:
==Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html
or: http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
=Dclick that file, mbam-setup.exe, to install the application,
-ensure that it is set to update and start, else start it via the icon, and UPDATE it.
Select "Perform QUICK Scan", then click Scan; the application will guide you through the remaining steps.
ENSURE that EVERYTHING found has a CHECKMARK against it, then click Remove Selected.
If malware has been found [and removed] MBAM will automatically produce a log for you when it completes... do not click the Save Logfile button.
Examine the log: if some files are listed as Delete on Reboot then restart your machine before continuing.
Copy and post that log [it is also saved under Logs tab in MBAM].
I am not sure that scan will clean all the malware, but I don't wish you to run Combofix if it is not necesary because it changes so many basic settings that it makes the resultant, cleaner system annoying to have to revert.
Next...
start hijackthis again, click Scan, in the window that opens place checkmarks against all the entries listed below that still exist, and then press Fix Checked.

Nothing terribly wrong that I see there, but then again I'm not too familiar with all of this stuff. Then again that's why you're here right? The second opinion. xD And thanks for all of the help by the way, I really appreciate it.

Mr Cz, use hijackthis to fix these entries:

You could remove via CP > Add, Remove Pgms the AVG toolbar. And the AIM toolbar. Up to you, I feel they just take up too much screen space, and duplicate functions your browser and search sites already give you.
Now apart from having had most of the world's adware on your sys I don't see anything in your ipconfig reports that indicate a problem. Sure, the DNS and ping timeouts are not good, but it comes down to what was causing the web delays. Your DNS server is configured - when working and you run nslookup its Reverse DNS lookup finds the server name associated with the IP address.
So, is your sys still having the loss-of-internet fits? And if it does, check that your AVG firewall is not interfering by momentarily switching it off.

Yes, I am still having the loss of internet fits. I'm fairly certain that it's not the AVG Firewall as it happens to my mom's computer as well. She connects via a wireless usb connection thing and the internet loss happens to her as well. I'll make sure to fix those entries when I get home. As for the adware.... >.> Computer was manufactured 6 years ago, and I've been using it for 5 of them. I just wish AVG would've caught the adware. I agree with you about the toolbars, side effects of updates though, I never use them or IE8. Google Chrome is just better IMO. I love being able to google anything without having to go to google.

My only question is what could be causing the loss of connection to comcast's server. That's why I have my suspicion that they're not providing enough bandwidth. It could be possible that they're doing maintenance... but not every day during random times during the day and even then stopping and starting again every few minutes.
