The smss.exe file is located in the c:\windows\System32 folder. In other cases, smss.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!

Also there is a blank spot in The SYS CONFIG startup category.
Startup Item is blank, Command is blank, and the Location is this:

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I did notice this earlier, but I'm no expert.

I believe I may have this, but I cannot actually find it when I do a virus scan:

Trojan.Regger.A

It sets IE restricted sites level to high.
Since I am fearfull of keeping my PC online, I am on another pc at home.

TrojanHunter Does not pick this up either.

Do you have any suggestions?

This 59kd53fg.exe.tcf looks bad to me as well.

The Trojan Hunter utility adds a .tcf extension to infected .exe files that it finds as a way of neutralizing them. As TH has already identified and neutralized the 59kd53fg.exe.tcf file, it should be safe to delete it.

Well, when I try to set the Security restrictions in IE settings off of HIGH - it does not allow me to. On Symantec's website, the info about the Trojan.Regger.A list a value for possible vslue changes causing websites to be restricted.

When the trojan is executed, it performs the following actions:

1. Adds the value:

"*" = "0x00000004"

to the registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\ZoneMap\Domains\171203.com

I did not have 171203.com
in the registry, but I manually went down the list and found about 5 - 8 of them listed with the value "*" "0x00000004"

I guess it's like some kind of spyware "war" going on in my pc? I don't relly know what to do. I fear that plugging my pc back online might put me at risk (identity theft and what-not).

I know I have some kind of problem still because IE still doesnot work. And I need it to work for updates in the future.

I now know that NortonAntivirus is not the best for Trojan detection, but I did update the virus list.
And again, Trojan Hunter did not find anything either.

Can you guide me anywhere else?

An 0x00000004 value for zones/domains in that registry sub-key means that those sites are added to your Restricted Sites zone in Internet Explorer. However, this does not necessarily mean that a trojan created those entries.

Since Symantec does indicate that current virus definitions should detect the trojan in question, but does not find the infection on your system, it's possible that those zones were put there by some other means.

I still get this message when I start IE:
"The web page you requested is not available offline. To view this page, click connect."

However Mozilla works fine. Is there something I need to look for in IE options?

Another thing; do you remember when I mentioned a blank spot or no name in the System Configuration Utility Startup section? (top of page3 thread#31)
I switched to a diagnostic startup and rebooted and the blank spot seems to have disappeared.
Just a thought.....
