What program/utility/etc to use to AUTOMATICALY recognize what file types are files rescued and saved as CHK files?

---------------------------------------------

I'm looking for a solution that offers automatical recognition of "what's actually there".

(My hard-drive crashed and there are four folders with CHK files (there's 10000 files in each* (FILE0000.CHK - FILE9999.CHK (8-character-name rule...))), I succeeded in recognising files that ACDSee recognises (pictures, videos and sound),but had to find other methods for other file types - and there's A LOT of them, so I need a solution for quick recognition (a program that doesn't philospohie about it (...^@%#$) - JUST LOOKS INSIDE and rename the damned file's extension - that simple!))

*by the way - programs for scaning hard-drives DO NOT make separate folders for each set of 10000 files, instead it just stops after 10000 files in the first folder (maybe it deletes the first set of 10000 when you order program to continue - so: be careful - you must manualy change folders as they fill-up during scanning of the disk program)
