This is apparently an old problem in sound recorder (XP-pro), but none of the posts I found anywhere seems to apply. I can record fine through my onboard hardware (SoundMAXHD), but when I try to use my modem as an input device to record telephone conversations (for my own protection with web purchases in particular), I get the above message. I've tweaked everything I can think of without success, including disabling the sound card and installing a different modem, and of course killing every process I don't need to stay alive. It's apparently either a leftover registry key or file or a bad permission, but I don't know where to look or what to look for.
