I've got a Windows 11 laptop but I need to set it up as a dual boot for Windows 10. The only dual boot I've ever done was Linux/Windows, I've never done a dual boot windows/windows. Should I expect any issues? After installing the additional windows 10 will I still be able to access the windows 11 OS? Thanks.

My daughter has a desktop computer and she needs more memory to run some of her applications. I've checked it out as best as I know how but all I can come up with is that the memory in it is 8 GB of ADATA XPG memory, and she has on empty slot. I googled the memory and I think I found it but it comes in two options, 8GB 3200Mhz & 8GB 3600Mhz, and I don't know which to get or if it matters.

Her computer is a: Cyber Power PC, product id: DC6115BB-FC14-4923-BAE9-F7455B8D1219, device id: DC6115BB-FC14-4923-BAE9-F7455B8D1219

Any ideas? Thanks.

I was going fair on my Udemy networking course until I go to lesson 47. Subnetting Large Networks Part 2, my brain started smoking. Up to this point I had been dividing the network/hosts on the forth octet. And when counting the bits that I was going to borrow from the host portion of the address I wouldn't even count the bits in the network portion of the address. If it was class C I would only count the bits in the forth octet, if it was a class B I would only count the bits from bit 17 and forward/right, and if it was class A from 9 forward/right. But when I got to this lesson the instructor divides the network on the third octet and for whatever reason he started counting the network bits from the beginning, the very first bit in the first octet. I've attached the file. My network/cicso training has come to a dead stop.

So I've had a media server for a while using Plex as the software with a Terra Master as the hardware. I've become dissatisfied with both for various reasons and I'd like to make my own, but I'm also open to Plex alternatives recommendations. What I want to do is replace the Terra Master with a small frame computer running Linux rather than the Linux based Terra Master OS. When using Plex I just launch the Plex app on my roku TV and it find the Plex server in my house. But if I create my own media server I don't know that the best way of building, or getting my media server user interface on my TV. I don't want to use a keyboard/mouse connected to my servers that's simply displaying on my TV, rather, I want to be able to continue to just use a remote, preferably the Roku remote but I'm open to using a 2nd remote for the media server. Also, what the best way to build an interface? As much as I hate PHP and web development, building a PHP driven page to list my ripped movies seems like the simplest approach. If I wanted to make sure the movie streamed via UDP over TCP, I also have no idea how I would accomplish that. Any suggestions. I think I'm done with Plex, or at least I hope to be. Thanks.

I'm taking a Cisco course on Udemy.com and doens't assume any prior network knowledge. Although I can maintain my home network usually without a hassle (at least before my supid !@#$ bought a mesh system that MUST be maintained with an app) I don't have any larger network knowledge. I have a basic understanding of subnets. I'm getting some answers wrong when the video ask my to pause and answer the question, I'm getting a lot of the right numbers but I'll have them on the wrong item, network ID vs broadcast ID, etc... I'm looking for some free practice and labs for IP addressing, subnetting, and general networking that I can go through before I continue this course. Does anyone have an suggestions? Running Linux Mint and I do have Packet Tracer 8.1.1 installed. Thanks.

I don't do a lot on my computer anymore and on the odd change that actually play a game on it it's usually and older game so there's not problem. However there is one part of the game Dieing Light that I can't play because the game becomes too choppy, I quit playing it years ago for that reason but it's one game I was hoping to finish. I do sometimes play Ark, it plays fine for the post part but it takes a long while to load the map. I don't do near as much with computers as I use to and I havent really touched hardare or built a computer in years so I no longer even know what most of the numbers and lettesr for the specs even mean, and I'm looking for cheap simple solution to speeding this thing up. Here's a small rundown of my hardware, can I increas the memory and if I can what kind of memory do I need to buy? I'm sure they'll have to dig it out of a junk yard.

My dad has an older laptop that I intalled Linux Mint on a long time ago and he loves his Linux Mint. For Father's Day I got him an SSD but when I would get to the part of the installation where it needs to format the drive it would always give me an error and fail. A few times it did this after I swapped the drives out but now the computer will not even boot to a Linux Mint ISO USB or DVD with the SSD drive in because it gives an error saying that there's no hard drive detected. Upon further inspection I think I've found the problem and I think it's a hardware issue I just don't know what to do about it. The old HDD has 4 more pins off to one side than the SSD does so I don't think the SSD has a chance of plugging in, although I don't know why it was letting me get as far into the installation process as it did the first few times if it couldn't see the SSD anyway. Images attached, what can I do about this? Thanks.

This may not be the best room to post this in but I didn't see any room that really jumped out at me for this, and since I'm doing all this on Linux desktop it made sense. I'm having trouble placing the meta data (artists, album, title) for a .wav song that I have. Through using three different programs I'm gettin different results. I can open the file in Rythmbox and select properties for the song and I can see the text fields for all the formentioned meta data above, thie fields all say 'Unknown' and the text fields aren't grayed out or anything but Rythmbox still will not allow me to change any of the meta data, clicking in any of those fields and typing yields nothing. I was able to change the meta data using VLC but VLC is the only application that sees the changed meta data, Rythmbox, Media Player, and my handeld digital music player all see null or Unknown for the meta data. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks.

Thanks. My only problem with PCMR was most of them are using the Ryzens and Amason reviews is showing them to be a little bit of a pain when it comes to Linux. Then again seeing as how that's what the PCMR builds are using maybe the guys posting the reviews on amazon don't know what they're talking about and the Ryzens are really fine for Linux.

This is what I've got.

AMD A10-6700 APU

Here's two that I'm looking at:

AMD FX 4-Core Black Edition FX-4300, FD4300WMHKBOX
&
Intel Core i5-2400 3.10 GHz Quad-Core Processor

Back when I was a kid it was easy to tell what was what and how powerfull one processor was compared to another. Today when I look at processors I have no idea what I'm looking at. I see a bunch of numbers and letters that have little to no meaning to me. I can't tell if either one of these is better, worse, or the same as what I already have.

lewashby 56 Junior Poster

Okay so I read the reviews for this processor on amazon and it doesn't seem to be the best choice for a Linux user. Can we simplifi this a bit? I'll choose a motherboard later that matches the processor. Can you tell me a good processor that is good for gaming and works well with Linux?
I recently tried playing Dying Light on my current Linux Mint system and the game began to slow down considerably during a pursuit.

lewashby 56 Junior Poster

Sounds complicated. Never done anything but through all the pieces in a box, insert a USB, CD, or DVD, and install the OS of my choice from an ISO file. Maybe I should go with something else.

lewashby 56 Junior Poster

I'm think of going with this processor, it was on that page you posted earlier. I'll then just need to find a good Asus or Gigabyte motherboard with the specs I need to go with it.

Thanks, resetting now.

I'm looking over some of the builds and comparing motherboards and processors on newegg and amazon too. When making sure that a motherboard and a processor are compatible do I need to be paying more attention to the chipset or the CPU socket type? Thanks.

My OS is Linux Mint.

My number 1 choice would be to create my own layout but start by coping that from a current layout and then just make the changes I want. Have no idea where to start with this but it would be great if I could figure that out. In the meantime, the current layout I have selected is working it's just a little bit of a pain. And I looked at that keyboard you posted, I am actually considering it. I tend to do a lot of the usualy on my computer like facebook, emails, etc... and I like to play around with coding so French is a minority of what I need on my computer, I might be able to use that keyboard as long as it doesn't interfer and make everything else I do on the computer harder.

I'm wanting to build a new computer but I'm having trouble, it's been a long time since I've built one and my head is starting to spin just looking at the options for motherboards.

I'm getting really confused browsing newegg motherboard opitons:

Don't know what socket type I need or want.
Don't know what chipset I need or want.
CPU type?
I know I would like about 8 SATA 6 GB/s for all my HDDs but I have no idea how many SATA 3 or 1.5 GB/s I need?
What the heck is M.2?
I thought USB 3.0 was backwards compatible, is there any reason to have USB 2.0 ports? What's the difference between USB 3.0 & 3.1?
What kind and how many PCI slots do I need?

Linux is my main OS so everything needs to be compatible with Linux, I might also have two other HDDs and or partitions for Windows and or SteamOS for gaming should a gaming mood come over me. I'm gong to be running 2 or 3 operating systems including Linux over probably 5 or 6 HDDs at least. I need somethign that will support my case's front 2.0 & …

No, I'm not wanting to create my own custom hardware keyboard. I use a standard keyboard but I can change the layout from the keyboard menu, there are some pretty simple ways of allowing you to type other romance language characters (mostly the same letters but with accents) with just a few extra key presses. I found one that's working 'English (UK, extended WinKeys), I'm able to type in all the French characters I need. It's working but some of the accents are a little easier to get to than others, some are a pain.

rproffitt
Don't want to go that far. I use my keyboard for a lot more than typing in French and going as far as plugging up a French keyboard would be overkill and a pain to work with. I would either have to make it work and leave it plugged up, change the keyboard everytime I wanted to do something different, or get a KVM, and I want less not more wire under my desk.

Anyway, I did find one that works it would just be nice if there was a way I could create my own custom keyboard layout. keyboardLayout.jpg

So I'm trying to learn French but I'm running into some complications when it comes to finding a good keyboard layout. Here are the layouts that I've tried so far:

English (US)
English (international Alt Gr dead keys)
English (UK, international with dead keys)
English (UK, extended WinKeys)

So far all have fallen short of what I need. I think only one of these listed above will allow me to type in the French c with a tail character ç. Most of the rest allow áéíóú, the problem here is that most of these accents are going the wrong way. Spanish uses these more, they're going from bottom left to top right where as most French accents go from bottom right to top left. Also, some the the keyboard layouts that allow these vowel accents that are going the wrong way will also not always contain the ç character. I'm really not interested in any solution that would force me to copy/past, drag/drop, or select these special character from a menu, I need to be able to type them on the fly. Does anyone know if there's a way to create a custom keyboard layout? Is they something that can be downloaded and installed online? And choosing a French keyboard layout is going way to far as it completely messes up my keys unusably. Thanks.

There are actually a lot of AAA games on Steam. Pretty much everything Valve ever produced is available on Steam, all the Half-Life titles (the original Half-Life, all the spin offs, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress Classic / 2, Portal 1 & 2, etc...) Metro Last Light, Dying Light was released for Linux the same time it was released for Windows. You can find a lot of options on both Steam and GOG for Linux support, always check GOG first then Steam. Also, if you go into the preferences on Steam you can check/uncheck your favorite OS and Steam will tailore it's advertising accordingly.

I've always used rsync either directly or through the program LuckBackup to keep everything in sync so again I don't know how this could have happened. Note that my music library is ext4 and my sd card is fat32. What should my rsync command look like to make both of these directories mirror each other with nothing deleted on either end? I recently created a post thinking I had blown up my bootloader but I've actually narrowed the problem down to the SSD on which my home directory is mounted. The reason my computer has not been booting is because my system is not mounting my home directory's SSD. This started after I opened my box and installed a new SSD which is now unplugged and not being used. Every since I opened my box my computer wouldn't boot again. I edited /etc/fstab while booted in a live USB and commented out the line telling my computer to auto mount the SSD drive to /home/user/. After that my computer has booted up just fine, except that I'm given a generic home directory without all of my files.
When I try to mount the drive manually this is what I get.

Thanks, I'm going to try the boot-repair thing out. Why does the the #2 direction say -> (do not burn it on CD/DVD if your PC came with Windows8)?

Since my Linux Mint is down I'm having to do all this from Windows 8.

Today I just put a new SSD in my desktop. I did have a little trouble booting up the OS because I had plugged the DVI into the wrong port, when I couldn't see the monitor I did end up turning off the computer several times before I finally found the problem. I don't know if the problem occured when I was physicaly in the box or during boot when I turned it back off several times but now my system will not boot. The grub screen does display but after selecting the Linux Mint option it goes to a screen that says ->

Welcome to emergency mode! After loggin in, type "journalct1 -xb" to view system logs, "systemct1 reboot" to reboot, "systemct1 default" or ^D to try agin to boot into default mode. Give root password for maintenance (or press Control-D to continue):

I think I have blown up my MBR or GRUB. I have validated that my boot drive is /dev/sda1.
Any ideas on how I can go about fixing this issue. I do have a live USB that I can boot into and make repairs. Thanks.
