No it isn't. It's better to create some free space on a hard drive and let Fedora's installer do the partitioning. This will avoid unwanted disk errors and partition format errors.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

Fedora will do all of the partitioning for you. If you just provide a chunk of free unpartitioned space it will create the appropriate mount points and swap space.

WoW; wish they had a registry cleaner for my Car ,maybe i could shave a few seconds of the commute to work .

i don't watch how long it take to boot my computer when i first turn it on ,usual gone for my morning psssssssssss.lol

Hah! A bit off topic, but what the hell...

Here is just one example, as I don't intend to spend ages discussing this.

I installed an application which is reasonably common, ie Norton Internet Security 2011. I then timed my startup to the point where the system gave me control of mouse and keyboard, ie all autoruns completed. Time 59 seconds.

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2011 and restarted. I then restarted AGAIN and timed startup. 52 seconds.

I then ran Glary Utilities, just cleaning the registry, restarted twice. Time 49 seconds.

I then ran Glary Utilities Registry Defrag and restarted twice. Start time 44 seconds.

I rest my case.

And how do you "measure' that faster speed?
Could just be the old placebo effect.

Erm, with a stopwatch.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

I'd have to disagree. I use Glary Utilities and have found that the Reg Cleaner in that does a fine job. My PC is always measurably faster if it finds anything to clean up. I AM a programmer.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

Ubuntu is fine but does not like some USB keyboards. I use Fedora precisely because I have a USB keyboard.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

lordrt, that is a fine package.

OK, what exactly do you need to see? Are you looking for a quantitative read out on which program or service is using your up and down connection at any specific time?

I'd recommend you try a 30 day free trial of DU Meter.

I clean up PCs professionally, and have done so for twenty years.

I use CCleaner, though there are lots of others out there. For some free tools try Gizmo's Freeware at http://www.techsupportalert.com/pc/cleanup-tools.html

Best of luck.

Have you tried converting the program to a process so it runs without a logged on account? I'm sure there was a tool out there somewhere that would do the conversion for you. I used it to run a VCN client on a server when there was no one in the office.

;)No probs

Please mark thread as solved if it is what you need.

If you have updated recently it could be that the shortcut is not associated with Internet Explorer.

Try this. Click the start menu and type "iexplore" without the quotes and hit enter. If it works you just need to re do the shortcut.

Good luck

*But I would install Google Chrome instead....:-)

You might want to try one of these. They are free for a trial period, but if all you want to do is check what software on your PC is using your connection, you will probably only need it for a day or two.

They are all available for download at CNet.

Good luck

Hi

Have you tried all these? This is the standard Microsoft Windows help for these symptoms.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Why-can-t-I-connect-to-other-computers#

As they made the system it is often a good idea to check their site first.

If you've tried all these, please post back.

I understand. No problem, that's what I'll do in future.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

Thanks for all the clarifications, guys. In future I'll be more careful.

Anything else like this I'll just post the link.

All the best

I posted a bit of help under the Windows 7 section, and I have been asked to make the thread sticky, but there's nothing I can find to tell me how this is done.

Anyone know how?

Thanks

LJ

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

I'd love to, but I don't know how...!

Delete Partition E:, then during install use the unused space.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

I would recommend Hijack This.

You can get it from http://uk.trendmicro.com/uk/products/personal/free-tools-and-services/

You can also format the partition from your Windows 7 Installation Disk.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

As the laptop is only a few months old, you can have it fixed free.

Go to Best buy and have them send it to HP for you.

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

Please tell us what your operating system is and try to type EXACTLY what message you get on the screen.

Windows does not have such a thing as a "Status Disk".

ljdellar 17 Light Poster

Are you connected to the internet by a slow connection? If you are trying to do a windows update, try to use a wired connection with a good speed, as otherwise updates can take a very long time.

I found this amazingly useful for setting PCs with SSD as boot drive and a large storage drive.

I have used this

and Hiren's Boot CD (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd) to fix this type of problem before.

You might need to press a special key (in my case F8) in order to boot from the USB disk while the machine starts up. That is what I do in order to boot my Linux drive. Once in Linux you can move GRUB start up files to the other HDD.

Hi Samson

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs and from there you can reset which program will open which file type.
