Field defined as a date no longer works in newest version of visual studio 2008

I have a dataset with a field defined as a system.datetime datatype.
In my visual studio 2008 that has crystal reports 12, I have a report that should display this date field.
This worked fine in an earlier version of visual studio 2008.
However, since I have installed the updates to visual studio 2008, this no longer works.
In fact, when I 'verify database' in my report, the field disappears from the list of fields in my crystal report but it still appears in my .xsd file.
When I re-define the field as a string and verify the database, the field will re-appear in the list; but then when I try to display it on the report, I get an error 'field not found'.
The visual studio version that the date works in is 2064252-60346. But my current version is 9.0.30729.1 SP1.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
