Howdy,

I have Verizon Fios. They provided a wireless modem/wireless router that sites in my basement. The wireless connection is pretty week upstairs. I have the modem/wireless router hardwired and bringing a cat5 cable upstairs. Can I add a wireless router to that connection upstairs? That would be a wireless router connected to a modem/wireless router. If not, do I use an Access point?

in my opinion yes ,I use Belkin wireless routers and they can be used as an access point.when you go into the IP setup of the router it will give you the option ,

NO NO NO!

Two options:

  • Either get a better modem/router (go N1 if you can, as is the most powerful option by far)
  • Look at wireless extenders which come in two classes;
    • One designed to boost the signal range
    • Other type is designed to be located btwn PC's and modem's
      location, acting as a relay point.

Adapting one router from another brings a whole world of headaches, especially when setting up application ports. Even most advanced users would cringe from such a task!

Yes, you can use a second router as a WAP. But, do not use the WAN connection, give it a static IP outside the range of the DHCP on your other router and disable DHCP on the WAP.

Here is a picture explaining it: http://www.burchwords.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Linksys_-_Router_to_Access_Point_final.jpg

and here's a further tutorial if needed: http://geekness.eu/content/how-turn-wireless-router-access-point

Just for further clarification. Most home "routers" are actually a combination of a WAP, router, and an ethernet switch.
