Hi:

Could you help me remove ngpw36 please? It's bothering me for a long time despite using several anti-spyware programs.

Thanks a lot,

Rawa

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Can you please do the following.

Run the PurityScan uninstaller.

===============

Please visit at least two of the following sites for an online virus scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments (prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from your PC. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

ngpw40.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidmon\vidmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn.exe
C:\windows\system32\rkdsregm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ngpw40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\MBOLS~1\explorer.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidmon
C:\WINDOWS\MBOLS~1
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar
C:\WINDOWS\UmFqZXNo

files...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sms_msn.exe
C:\windows\system32\rkdsregm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ngpw40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsz1F9.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ngsh35.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\irsmtjgr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kwinlsag.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ZIFI002.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svdfexi.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Your help is greatly appreciated. I followed all the steps and am already witnessing performance improvement.

I have attached the final Hijackthis log for your review. Please advise if similar looking files like kwinlsag.exe, ngsh40.dll also need to be deleted.

Thanks,

Rawa

You have done very well there :). You just need to go in to the registry now to remove an entry that hijackthis sometimes has difficulty with. Please either back up the registry, or create a system restore point first.

Start>>Run and type regedit
Press enter.
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Command Service (cmdService)

If Command Service (cmdService) exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Command Service (cmdService)

If LEGACY_Command Service (cmdService) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Once you have done that, reboot and post a final hijackthis log please.

Edit. Did you install and run Ewido as suggested? It is an excellent tool and I reckon you will be pleased with what it might remove.

I am not able to remove the following even in the safe mode.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Command Service (cmdService)

Also please advise if similar looking files like kwinlsag.exe, ngsh40.dll also need to be deleted.

Ewido helped me remove 3 tracking cookies. Latest Hijack log attached at the end.

Thanks,

Rawa

Download Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.
Run the program and navigate to those keys and delete them, including the two you mentioned in your last post.
If they will not delete, go to the security button and select 'Take Ownership.'
Once done you should be able to delete it.

Let me know how you go.

Needs pro version to take the ownership.

Haven't seen that before, unless they have changed it?

Can you please post another hijackthis log please. That other is just an orphaned registry anyways, so no harm will come :).
