What anti-malware program did you run? Do you have THAT log? If so we need to see that also. We also need more information on the computer itself, hard drive size, how much RAM is installed?
You have a LOT running at start up and running in the background which could affect the ability of the computer to run resource intensive programs. I don't see an onboard antivirus program running? Where is it and what is it? This is an ABSOLUTE MUST. Your logs also do not show any firewall, also an absolute must. Are you using the built in Windows Firewall or No firewall?
You have also left off the top portion of the second log...the part that reads like this;

MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16674)

That needs to be posted each time also as it gives the time the scan was done and vital information on the computer.

Thanks for the patience, I'm in and out doing fun summer things...hope you are!!

Let's see, lots of answers due from me. MalWareBytes Antimalware got rid of a Trojan agent and 12 infected files. I've messed with the system so much that log file is outdated. I'm going to attach a new HJT log after attempting to disable all the startup programs with MSCONFIG. Further, I'm going to attach an Everest report of my computer.

Please be aware that I am on a home wireless network (I'm a wireless engineer) with AES running and experimenting with different security suites, therefore only running hardware security. I do have some spyware stuff on the system, etc. that I use to check up manually when something goes haywire. I am currently not seeing any shutdowns after finding that Trojan agent but would like to continue the evaluation of the system. It would be nice if I could learn to read the HJT files and I really appreciate the help.

I'd also like to get rid of a lot of that startup stuff that's running, although I have 4G mem and the system runs fine, but frankly I'm a hardware guy and don't know what I need and what to get rid of - I certainly need to know more about it, I just don't pay much attention to the software end.

One thing I looked into but am unsure how to handle is the small amount of free space on the D: partition. It's the HP recovery partition and there are warnings all over the place not to mess with the programs on there.

many thanks,
zeroth

Problems & Suggestions:
Problem Disk free space is only 4% on drive D:.

Do me a favor, go back into msconfig and re-enable everything that you disabled. Can't tell you what or how to turn off an auto start unless I know what they are. msconfig should really be used only for troubleshooting not for permanent turn off. I can give you a couple of GOOD FREE programs to use to control auto starts but need to see all of them first.
Re-enable them and then run me a new HJT scan and I can tell you what and how to do it.
Judy

Thanks, Judy, I turned everything back on and here's a fresh HJT log. Doing some further digging, I may have an issue with system32\lsass.exe OR I could have got rid of it, not certain - I got a status code message this AM sithe status code 1074731819 and ran a Symantec fix for W32.Blaster.Worm - However, when I returned from a chore, the program had finished without a report - I reran in safe mode and it told me I had no worm. Maybe I caught it.

Many thanks for this help, as you can tell I haven't done this in a couple years...I remember how, sort of...so I'm just dangerous enough to have to ask for help!!

I will go through the start ups and note the ones that can be disabled and get back on that shortly with instructions how to do so but FIRST and foremost, I don't see an anti-virus program or a firewall running on the system. These are absolute MUSTS today.
You can use the built in Windows firewall, I do. Many disagree with it since it only is a "one way" firewall, just stops invaders but doesn't stop your computer from sending out...my feeling is, if the Windows Firewall stops things from coming in then there won't be anything going out. But this is your choice, there are several good FREE firewalls many recommend;
ZoneAlarm Free - - Probably the most popular free choice.
Comodo Firewall Version 3.0 - - Quite possibly the best Free choice!
PC Tools Firewall Plusā„¢ 3.0 for WindowsĀ® - - Another solid Free option!

For anti-virus programs;
AVG Free Edition

ā€¢ AntiVirĀ® Personal Edition Classic

ā€¢ Avast! Home Edition
Your Java is also out of date. Current version is 6 update 7. I would update that AFTER you install the anti-virus program and firewall.
I will go through the rest of the log and let you know what and how to disable from auto starting.
Judy

OK, Judy, I've turned back on Windows Firewall and Avast. It was with AVG and Avast that I was experimenting when this issue began, as follows:

Was using AVG and they started wanting a paid update, switched to Avast, didn't completely trust it. Then switched to Avira AntiVir and it askes for upgrades all day long. I tried to get rid of Avira and could NOT. Computer hard reset when I tried Control Panel Add/Remove, so finally erased the files manually. There's still something in there, however, as follows:

Nests upon nests...yeah! Plus, somewhere along the line of this activity I got the current problem...

Anyway, when I was following your suggestions just now, the Windows Security suite said there was already an antiVirus up and running and reporting everything OK! Yep, this Avira thing. But there's nothing in the system to do with Avira that I can see. After starting up Avast again, Windows Security says there are more than one antiVirus running, at least one of which reports AOK. That could definitely be a problem!

Here's the latest HJT for reference. zeroth

Anyway, when I was following your suggestions just now, the Windows Security suite said there was already an antiVirus up and running and reporting everything OK! Yep, this Avira thing. But there's nothing in the system to do with Avira that I can see.

Try running Belarc Advisor. It is free and will do a quick scan of the computer and give you a full picture of the computer, including programs installed. If it shows on there then there has to be a least one little file remaining. If so, then do a file search and be sure to check hidden files and folders also. If something is found you can then remove it.
Now for your auto starts; I recommend CodeStuffStarter to control these. You can use it for both the Start Up programs and also Services too. Very easy to use.
Here are those items that you can safely disable auto starts;

Remind_XP.exe...HP-specific program that reminds users to create System Recovery CDs. Once they use the Recovery CD Creator (Start -> PC Help & Tools -> Recovery CD Creator) to make the recovery CDs the entry will remove itself from the startup list

Recorder.exe...records all kinds of sound from sound card with high quality. It records the sound from other Windows applications with CD quality. It also supports to record sound from microphones, line-in, Cassette Tape, Video Tape and more input devices (am not familiar with the program but would imagine it could be run manually when needed. Your choice.

QuickTime Task... System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards

Persistence... Associated with the Common User Interface module for Intel graphics cards

KernelFaultCheck...Used in connection with memory dumps - you can disable these by - right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button in 'Startup and Recovery'. In the bottom pane - under 'Write debugging information' - click on the down arrow and then select 'None' - OK your way out

iTunesHelper... Installed with Apple's iTunes for Windows. Uses ~3-4MB of memory

IAAnotif...IAA Event Monitor User Notification Tool - part of IntelĀ® Application Accelerator - "a performance software package for desktop PCs using select IntelĀ® chipsets" that "replaces the ATA drivers that come with Windows with drivers optimized for desktop and mobile PCs." If you use the RAID version it's required to notify you if a RAID 1 disk has failed. Whether or not you need to run this program on startup must be decided by you. If you feel that you want this program starting automatically so that you have it available as needed, then do not disable it.

HPBootOp... HP Boot Optimizer. Really unknown what this does for sure. It is not required however for the computer to run normally.

HP Software Update...HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, create your own and run it manually

HotKeysCmds... Installed by the Intel 810 and 815 chipset graphic drivers. If you want the Ctrl+Alt+F12 or similar keypresses to access Intel's customised graphics properties, you need it, otherwise not. Can be disabled via Control Panel -> Display Properties

ftutil2... Part of the driver for the Promise FastTrack raid controller. Up to you.

ehTray...This startup loads a system tray icon that allows you to control various aspects of Media Center. Up to you.

DMAScheduler...Associated with the HP DigitalMedia Archive product that comes bundled with many computers. Not required

DISCover.exe nogui...process associated with DISCover Drop from Digital Interactive Systems Corporation. Not critical.

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher...supposedly speeds up boot time for Adobe Reader. Can easily be run manually as speed up time is minimal

Adobe Photo Downloader
...From Photoshop Elements. This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary
resources.

Start WingMan Profiler
... Logitech Wingman software required to operate Logitech joysticks and gamepads. Unless you're a hard-core gamer, it's best to leave it unchecked
This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

SpybotSD TeaTimer
...spam filter which perpetually monitors the processes called/initiated. I always advise turning this portion of Spybot off. It really can cause more trouble than it is worth as it is known to interfere with fixes done by some antivirus programs and antispy programs. Leave it off.

MSMSGS...Windows Messenger utility (NOT an IM program). If you don't use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Go to Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts"

Picture Motion Browser Media Check Tool...Part of the software bundled with Sony Digital Cameras. This program will monitor for when media is inserted into your computer and then ask if you would like to import any pictures or video.

Microsoft Office
...Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog. Most people feel the "speed up" really is minimal especially compared to the resources this uses running in the background.
Ad-Aware 2007 Service...another resource hog and really unneeded portion of the newer versions of AdAware. Program has really gone "downhill" somewhat since this newer version was released. I would advise uninstalling the whole program really.

Another good program, free also, to use to control autostarts is Mike Lin's Start Up Control Panel.

For additional security protection another MUST HAVE program, and it also is FREE is SpywarBlaster. Key thing about this super program is that it does the following;
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

You can also run HJT again and place checkmarks next to these two entries;
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)
Once you have placed the checkmarks then click the Fix Checked button and exit HJT.
Reboot the computer.
Those two entries were Browser Helper Objects for your previous AVG Anti virus program.

By the way, AVG 8 DOES still have a free version, not sure why you felt it was now a pay only program.

And for your comment on constant updating of Avira...you can schedule a once a day update within the program and then it will only update once a day.
Judy

I took all your suggestions and thanks again for the great help. I'll just have to see if the restart issue is fixed with time.

I like Belarc and CodeStuffStarter - good stuff. And the descriptors on all those programs really were a great help...

I feel cleaner at least!
Thanks,
zeroth

Keep us posted please.
