Hi gbear, you have some things to fix there, but right now you're running HJT from a temp folder. In order for it to safely save backups, it should be in a permanent folder. Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

HJT also needs to have all browser windows closed in order for it to make fixes properly. So, after you've moved HJT to a safe folder, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

ok, thanks for the suggestions. I moved HJT to C:\. I ran the scan again so here is my log. Thanks for your help.. gbear

ok, thanks for the suggestions. I moved HJT to C:\

Nope- something didn't quite work there. It's still running from a Temp dir according to this entry:

C:\Documents and Settings\Gena\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

Once you've (really) moved HJT to its own folder, run it again and have it fix the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:NavigationFailure
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:NavigationFailure
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:NavigationFailure
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:NavigationFailure
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:NavigationFailure
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:NavigationFailure
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8C97F441-EEA6-43B1-970F-537F5A6E59AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fgjep.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
O18 - Filter: text/html - {E963234D-35E7-4B6F-95EF-52084C584200} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fgjep.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain - {E963234D-35E7-4B6F-95EF-52084C584200} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fgjep.dll

After HJT has completed its fixes, do the following:

- Reboot into safe mode

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- Delete the entire C:\Program Files\WildTangent folder.

- Delete the C:\WINDOWS\System32\fgjep.dll file.

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

- Post a new HJT log.

ok, will try to do it right this time and will repost the log. Thanks. Also, I just received an email to my gbear0403@yahoo.com account, and until I get this problem fixed, I am unable to access my email- (grrrrrrrr). so if any of you are trying to email me..please im me at my yahoo messenger gbear0403 or contact me here. This is such a PITA!!!!

Sorry gbear- I know this is all a PITA, but for the reason described in this excerpt from our Posting Guidelines, we don't respond to problems "off-forum" (that is- via email, chat, etc.):

Keep it on the site
Please do not post asking for an answer to be sent to you via email. Problems and their responses assist others who read them. Please refrain from responding to people's questions via email for the same reason...

We're going to have to work through this one here in this thread.

working thru this here is what I want. I cannot open my email.. I have done the steps outlined previously (or at least I hope I have done them all). Here is my latest hijackthis log. but when I rebooted my computer (after rebooting in safe mode and following directions); it still came up with the "about:blank" page...this is so frustrating... I think I will shoot my teenage son soon....(just kidding) Thanks again for all your help. Gbear

Hang in there- it's dinner time in my end of the world, so I do really need to log off now. However, some of our other security responders (crunchie, dlh6213, caperjack) live in different time zones, and should therefore be able to pick up on this before I get back online tomorrow AM.

good news, I think things are all better. I'd feel better though if one of you super guru types can tell me if my hijackthis log is clean now.. also, can someone tell me how to set up some parental controls or locks or passwords or something so my son (who shall be untrustworthy for a while in my books) will have no choice in the future. Temptation will not be a problem for him if he is prevented from going to sights he shouldn't be going to. Thanks again, Gbear

...I just received an email to my account, and until I get this problem fixed, I am unable to access my email- (grrrrrrrr)...

The emails you're talking about are probably the ones that are generated automatically when someone responds to a thread you are subscribed to. Can you get to your email now?

I don't know what happened, but you are now using an older versions of HJT (1.97.7), but you were using the latest version before (1.98.2). You should scan again with the newer version and post another log.

As for your son, there is no reliable way to keep him out of trouble without standing there looking over his shoulder. The best thing to do is to have a talk with him (like you haven't done that already, right?)

To help protect your system, you should keep it updated with Window Updates and use a utility like SpywareBlaster (it's free!).

Your last log looks ok, but this infection is known to return

Download CWShredder v1.59.1.
Save it to your desktop.
Do not run it yet. We will run it later.

Download the Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool from Symantec.
Follow Symantec's instructions for how to run it.
Be sure to save the log file. I will need to see it later.
Restart your computer.
Run CWShredder. Be sure to click Fix as opposed to Scan Only. It should find some things and remove them.
Restart your computer once more.
Post a new HijackThis log and the log Symantec's tool gave you.

you guys are just the best. I am trying to do what y'all have advised but I have a question. When I upgraded to the latest version of hijackthis; i clicked onto the config. of it and this is what it says:
default page: about:blank.......now this is concerning me...(I think with good reason)... so everytime i run the scan..i get that error to fix... how can this be solved?

also , i just ran the backdoor.agent.b removal tool from symantec, and it said nothing was found, so i have no log to post from it

ok, I think I have accomplished all that you suggested previously. I have upgraded to latest version of hijackthis and have posted the last log below. I still have some questions though. 1. on the config of hijackthis.com; it still says "About:blank" is this computer's home page (though I haven't had anymore problems with it), 2. I installed the spywareblaster and it did remove the CWS.HiddenDll from my computer. but even on the spywareblaster it says that "about:blank" is the home page. should I be concerned with this?? thanks again for all of your help.. As for my son- will let's just say he is a typical 15y/o and what I say is going in one ear and out the other, but hopefully the message has gotten through this time (I hope).

here is my HJT log (there was no log form symantec when I ran the backdoor.agent.b removal tool.

The "about:blank:" listed in HJT's options shouldn't be confused with the infamous about:blank hijack. "about:blank" can be a valid home page setting; it corresponds to the "Use Blank" option in the Home Page settings section of your Internet Options control panel, which just sets your default home page to a blank page.

As far as your log goes- you can have HJT clean up this one last loose end, but otherwise you're clean:

(You can always have HJT fix entries which indicate "file missing" or "no file"; HJT is basically telling you that those entries are just "broken pointers" to a file which no longer exists on your system.)

That may not be entirely true; unless the bug has been fixed, crunchie gave this bit of advice last month:

"Only fix these if you do not have Java Sun.

Hijackthis has a bug that misinterprets some 09 entries."

Yikes! I wasn't aware of that, but apparently you're right- I just found a post (dated less than a month ago) by someone whose HJT scan indicated missing files in some 09 entries when the files actually did exist on his system.

Anyone have more info on this? A quick Googling didn't reveal much....
