Hi guys, I was hoping you could help me. Recently I noticed a suspiscious file called Faxjava.exe lurking around my system processes. I ran adaware, noadware, and spybot and nothing could get rid of it. It also showed up as a keylogger in keylogger killer. In a panic I punched in the path name in KILLBOX. it was under faxjava.exe in the Windows Tasks folder. I then slected the corresponding entry in Hijack this aswell as the Cattle Events. Well, the faxjava disappeared... but now my search function is gone, my WMP doiesn't work (says internal error), and I know something is wrong with my IE. I use firefox though so its not a big deal, but I don't know how to refix everything. I even restored to the point right before I used KILBOX. No dice. I have also tried reinstalling WMP to no avail. I have also used registry mechanic and registry first aid and nothing is working. Can someone please help me? I really need my media player to edit some videos I need to finalize for a project. Also I must mention that NO media players work on my computer. Here is my Hijack this log. I am on Windows XP at 1700mhz and 768 memory. Thanks in advance. :cheesy:

Can anyone please help me?

I don't know if this will fix the problems you're having, but let's get your system clean then fix the problems (if they still exist).

Reboot into Safe Mode

Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View, and select "Show hidden files and folders," and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:
Cookies
History
Local Settings\Temp
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Delete the entire content of
C:\Windows\Temp folder
C:\Temp folder

Do a search for *.tmp and delete everything found (hopefully your search function will work in Safe Mode)

Empty your Recycle Bin

Scan with HJT, and have it fix the following entries:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {2527BEEF-1B3C-4D3B-98F0-7F3C1EB910A0} - C:\DOCUME~1\JULIAN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\avajxaf.dat
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*faxjava] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxjava.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*faxjava] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxjava.exe rerun

Close all windows, other then HJT, before hitting the Fix button

Go to C:\WINDOWS\Tasks and delete faxjava.exe

Reboot normally

Go to Windows Update for updates (this may fix your WMP)

Close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

Looks like their still in the Hijack This

Thanks.

Julian

Oh yea, I also ran the new Windows Spyware, and got rid of some stuff. I used the options to block faxjava. But when I restarted ti doesn't show it as blocking. Can you please help me a bit more. I'm sure a man of your expertise is quite busy. I appreciate it.

Julian

I'm getting desperate fellas. Please don't make me experiment. Thats all I need.

Thanks,

Julian

There's still something running from C:\Documents and Settings\Julian*\Local Settings\Temp
(O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {2527BEEF-1B3C-4D3B-98F0-7F3C1EB910A0} - C:\DOCUME~1\JULIAN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\avajxaf.dat)

*Can't read the whole name

Be sure you have it set to "Show hidden files and folders," and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"

If you still can't find it, I may have the wrong path; do a Search for avajxaf.dat; delete it and anything else within that Temp folder.

Run hijackthis, go to Config\Misc tools\Delete a file on reboot, and enter the following:

C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxjava.exe

When asked to reboot, click No.

Scan with hijackthis and have it fix the following entries. Close all windows before you hit the "Fix checked" button.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {2527BEEF-1B3C-4D3B-98F0-7F3C1EB910A0} - C:\DOCUME~1\JULIAN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\avajxaf.dat
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*faxjava] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxjava.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*faxjava] C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxjava.exe rerun

Reboot

Go to Start, Run, and type in regedit.

Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup. At the top of the Registry window, click on the Registry menu, click Export Registry File. In the Export range panel, click All, then save your registry as Backup.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, RunOnce. Click on RunOnce to highlight it and look in the right-hand pane for faxjava.exe and delete it (and nothing else).

Reboot again, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

Unfortunately I couldn't search for the avajxaf.dat because my search browser is not working also. I performed everything else though. One thing to mention is that NONE of my media players work. Not just WMP. Also when I run dxdiag it says that there are problems in my registry. When I look at the report it says I am missing a ton of them. Did putting the faxajava.exe into my killbox earlier erase a bunch of them at one time? Am I pretty much done for because of the missing keys? Thank you for replying. I appreciate any and all further help.

Julian

Can you try to do a System Restore to about two weeks before you used the Killbox (instead of a point right before)?

No.. I've tried to go back as far as possible and the earliest is the 9th of January. I tried to restore previously but it said that it was not possible to restore to that point.

Thanks,

Julian

Hey guys, I appreciate the help. I know you're busy but in all honesty I've seen parapalegics who respond faster than you guys do. I know the service is free and yo're doing it out of the kindness of your hearts, so thank you. But no thanks, I'll seek help from another website that responds in a timely fashion.
