Also, I've booted into Safe Mode and attempted to delete this file. I ran HijackThis shortly after entering Safe Mode. I can delete the file—stivc.exe—but is recreated in seconds. I've ran Symantec AntiVirus, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, a-squared, and Trojan Hunter. The program Trojan Hunter said it was a possible trojan file, but did not remove it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stack Overflow,

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :). (Sorry, I had to do that :D)

-

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution (if provided in this post). This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

files...

C:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe

Search for...

ALCMTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting your PC, rescan with hijackthis and post a new log.
Let me know how things are now.

----------------------------------

I have a few O23 Services that are missing files. Those were picked up as Trojans during my scan before the stivc.exe occurence. My TrendMicro scan only picked up two:

----------------------------------

BKDR_HACKDEF.84 — C:\WINNT\system32\hxdef100.exe
TROJ_MULTIDRP.AN — C:\WINNT\system32\vocewob.old

----------------------------------

All seems to be well now, or I hope. I've tried to Fix those O23 segments, but had no luck. Either way, they are of no harm to me anymore. The TrendMicro scan did not detect stivc.exe and each time I attempted to delete it, it would re-create itself. Even after running HJT. So I booted to DOS and deleted it. It hasn't come back since.

Thank you for your help.
