Hello all ... i'm having problems with VX2 and a lot of other nasties ...

I've followed the guide on the stickies and run Ad-Aware SE and Spybot but these are not really clearing up the problem ... would you mind having a look at my log file and suggesting what else I could do to sort out my problems please.

Thank you in advance ...

macdory,

You have a few things there that need removing...

-

There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with in your log and cannot get info on. If you recognise any, then just omit them from this fix.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

OR

You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u nctb.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

c:\windows\system32\dedesyn.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: &Netcraft Toolbar - {D554D8FC-B36D-4BB4-93DB-4A3394D505E3} - C:\Program Files\Netcraft Toolbar\nctb.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xzikjmz] c:\windows\system32\dedesyn.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Netcraft Toolbar

files...

c:\windows\system32\dedesyn.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

Thanks for the quick reply Crunchie ...

Most of the items you highlighted to be deleted were present - followed your steps and rebooted - here is my new log file.

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

Hello Crunchie ... thanks again for your quick response ...

When I try and kill the process the file in Program Manager it starts up another program at the bottom of the list with a different name (always a 7 letter name.exe)

I couldn't delete the file in explorer either as it was in use - so I restarted in Safe Mode and set it so I could view all hidden/system files/etc ... the file wasn't in the Windows/System32 directory to delete. I also tried sorting by date modified and there were no files with 7 letters.exe that had been modified in the last few days. HijackThis didn't show any program running in safe mode that looked suspicious.

Just reran HijackThis again in normal mode and there is once again a file with a random 7 letters.exe in there that just spawns a new program if i try and kill the process ...

This is one stubborn son of a gun ... any tips please ...

Thank you

Hi

Pocket Killbox couldn't delete the file ... and when I chose the option to delete on reboot the file had changed its name so Killbox couldn't find it on reboot.

Quick update ...

I managed to delete the file with Pocket Killbox - I forgot to close down HijackThis with my first attempt above ... however, it just respawned again with a new name as soon as Pocket Killbox deleted it.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Open the text file you saved previously and right click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Gah - still got random naming file (actually 6 or 7 random letters.exe)

Trojan Remover flagged a file called Nail.exe as a Trojan which I deleted ... however on the next log in, my PC downloaded the file again which I cancelled the option to Run it. I re-ran Trojan Remover which again flagged this file as a Trojan.

I ran adaware which flagged up 33 problems - 2 modules, 3 registry values, rest files ... all cleaned up - needed reboot. But with the random generating file still there opening Aurora I guess thse will be back shortly.

Just done a search on Aurora in google and got a few links to other people having the same problem - one of them linked to the companies webpage where they are offering an uninstaller program ... http://www.mypctuneup.com/ ... as i'm thinking things can;t get any worse with this I decided to give it a try as others had recommended it ... it appears to have sorted out the problem ...

What do you reckon? Any other nasties there?

You just have one entry that needs to go by the looks of things...

-

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZN

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

I couldn't find MyWebSearch in Add/Remove Programs ...

But deleted reference in HijackThis

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.
