Hi, I recently got a message on my computer (Windows Vista Home Premium) from Windows defender, stating that I have harmful or unwanted software on my laptop. I click remove, windows defender says "successful", but this same pop-up comes back when I reboot and while my laptop is on.

I did a little bit of research, and I scanned my laptop with MALWARE BYTES ANTI-MALWARE. I updated the program, and removed the FAKEALERT I was getting.

Next, I tried running HIJACKTHIS, but I got this message - "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HIJACKTHIS may NOT b e able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click start, run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press enter"

HIJACKTHIS then scans, and I click SAVE LOG FILE, but whyyyy is it giving me the message I just typed up top ??? any suggestions???

I also used my mcafee total protection, windows defender, and my superantispyware program to scan for issues. ONLY windows defender gave me the alert for the FAKEALERT virus. I do not know if it is real, but I attached a photo of the alert I was getting. I hope that also helps!!

My laptop seems to freeze a little bit, and it is a little slower at start up. - I cleaned my laptop with my mcafee maintanence tool, CCleaner, and also disk cleanup from windows. I really want to make sure that it is free of viruses or spyware, and I hope someone can help with reading the log.

PLEASE HELP ASAP WITH THOROUGH AND COMPLETE ANSWERS! I HOPE MY INFORMATION WAS HELPFUL TO YOU, AND I NEED HELP WITH THIS ASAP PLEASEEE !!
After running the antimalware program, I DID NOT see the fakealert message again, but I NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT MY SYSTEM IS FREE AND CLEAN OF VIRUSES.

any suggestions??? please help !! thanksss .........

It is just a warning from this test version that you may not be able to fix a Host Hijack using the HiJackThis program and will have to do this manually.
Don't worry about this, there is no indication that the Hosts file needs fixing.

hi, thanks for the reply. So I have nothing to worry about with the hijackthis program right?

I after running the anti-malware program, I no longer saw the virus message which I attached a picture of here.

Is there anything else I should do to protect myself?

I have antivirus, and spyware protection on my pc. and I ran the scans I stated earlier in my first post.

any other suggestions?? please reply - thanks !

I think the log looks fine. You can go ahead and uninstall HiJackThis via Add/Remove as you will not need it anymore.
Keep the MBA-M as it is an excellent program. Update it and do a Quick Scan with it weekly at least. If something is found, Remove it, Reboot, Update the program again and do a Full Scan, just to be safe. Remember ALWAYS update MBA-M before each and every scan, even one right after the other. This program had daily updates for sure and sometimes several updates in one day so be sure to always update first. You can mark this solved.

I have a few suggestions (bare in mind these are only suggestions)

1.Avira antivirus and avast! antivirus should delete the virus.

2.Hold together Ctrl, Shift and Esc and stop the virus process.

3.Click start then run type cmd and click OK. Then type dir /s then hit enter after that type del TrojanDownloader:Win 32/Renos.JM and that might work.

Let me know if any of this helps.
