Hi everybody,

I got infected by hacktool rootkit yesterday, and after spending hours to get to terms with my stupidity and the fact that I fell in the trap like a kid, I am giving up the fight to get rid of the nasty thing via usual means...you guys are my only hope! The problems are all the same: I run Symantec and the only thing that it does is quarantine the msdirectx.sys, that keeps reproducing over and over again...I followed microsoft's instructions, trying the manual delete, but no luck...

I attach my HJT log...

Thanx in advance to whoever will help...

Hi klauskinky, welcome to DaniWeb :D

Norton should be able to remove that; follow the instructions here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/hacktool.rootkit.html

Move hijackthis into it's own permanent folder (it's now in a Temp folder), so that it, and the backups it will create, will not get deleted during the cleanup process.

After you've moved hijackthis, close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

You can also try running a couple of these free online anti-virus/anti-spyware scans and have them clean what they can:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

Deat Dlh,

Thank you for the prompt reply, you can imagine what a relief it is to know that's you're not alone in the battle! I have moved HJT in program files, I run it again and this is what came out:

I also run symantec Antivirus Corporate edition a few times, and although it deleted the files, they keep coming back...what do you suggest? Also, I have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.1, and I can't quite follow the suggestions on the symantec page you sent me as Option...uh...is not an option in my version of the program!! There is something, though, that says:"scan all files"...so I suppose I'm on the right track...but it doesn't solve the problem...any suggestion looking at the HJT file?

Thanx again

Could it be possible that you didn't turn off system restore and that's the reason it's coming back?

This nightmare is easy to fix. Go to cnet and download malwarebytes. Do a full system scan (may take up to 30 mins) and it'll detect and remove it with a few clicks of your mouse. Restart and you're done.
