Okay, this is my first post here, and I am desperate. My computer has been bombarded with popups for a couple months now. I have installed and ran adaware and Spybot to no avail. Using ZoneAlarm, I was able to stop the popups but at the same time, lost my internet connection altogether. Posting about this problem on another forum, I was referenced to this site, and told to run HJT. So...please!

here is my HJT log:

your system seems to have a pretty big trojan presense
it may be really difficult / impossible to completly clean it off
i highly recpmend checking those in hijackthis then booting to safemode after and running it again
regular safemode no networking or anything
make shure your antivirus definitions are uptodate
and do a scan in safemode after second time running hijack this

maybe run adaware also

your system seems to have a pretty big trojan presense
it may be really difficult / impossible to completly clean it off

Well, difficult - for sure, impossible - no way...

For start, make sure you have installed (and updated) following pieces of software:
- AdAware 1.06SE
- Ewido Security Suite (if possible, not obligatory, it is shareware so there's a trial available, but it'll do for your need for the time being)
- CCleaner

Then, after scanning system with HijackThis, reboot system in safe mode as magusdf said, and follow the pattern:
- Scan with HijackThis, check all stuff magusdf put in red (those after processes), clean it.
- continue with CCleaner
- AdAware (complete scan)
- Ewido Security Suite (complete scan too to clean AdAware's leftovers, if any).

Reboot and check out functionality.

For your own piece of mind, you could rerun AdAware and Ewido while booted normally to see if they'll find any newly emerging problem...

As for Symantec, that computer - is it at home or at work?
I'm asking this because from home use, NIS (Norton Internet Security) or SAV (Symantec AntiVirus), are almost overkill.

Have a nice day (at least after cleaning computer)

C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe
check this one it seems kinda odd that the definitions watch types out the full try

Sorry, magusdf, there is no need to do a checking - it is just a trayed Symantec's application, that gives access to it, and it is "manifested" as yellow shield in a tray, it is OK (it has to be there)

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

Download & instal Spybot S&D 1.3 from here. Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. This program will prevent the install of bad activex controls that it has knowledge of. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:

  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Download CCleaner and install, but do not run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode. To do this with Windows XP, you can follow these steps from Microsoft:

  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when you the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Next, run Ewido again.

  1. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  2. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  3. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

.

Now, run CCleaner.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
