Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix the lines above.

In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Thanks crunchie.

I poured over this and a couple other forums and you seemed to have the most correct answers. I was home for lunch today and the ol lightbulb lit. I used system restore and went to a point two days before I stareted receiving this about:blank hyjack. Since system restore deletes files and returns the registery to a previous clean (hopefully) state, the hidden dll file is gone. Then when you manually turn of system restore, all previous restore points are deleted. Turning it on again creates a new restore.

So far so good.

Thanks again for your quick reply.

Gene

Hi I'm new here and find it extremely useful. I was also hijacked by a very similar piece of malware. I made some attempts last night to get rid of it, but it kept reinstalling itself.

So I did some research today here and on some other forums and was just about to start the laborious process described in the solutions when I also had the same idea about a system restore. I have Windows XP Professional and did a system restore from a day or two before the problem and all seems fine.

My only concern is that this all seems too easy!
Is this a valid solution solution, or am I being naieve?
If it is valid, why doesn't everyone do it?

Regards, Slugsy

It is a valid solution but not everyone has system restore :) . Make sure that you get your critical updates from Microsoft or you WILL get hit again.
