My immense problem started randomly when i attempted to click on my recycle bin and it refused to open, i followed this up by attempting to open My Documents but this failed as well, my answer to this was to restart my computer and upon doing so i was left with my custom wallpaper and explorer not running. I am able to open and run most programs using my task manager, but i need to get this working the way it used to.

I've seen other threads here on this subject and seen mentions of hijackthis, please tell me where to get it and what to do so someone can help me, i've wasted literally many many hours trying to fix this and seem to have made it absolutely nowhere.

Any help is ridiculously appreciated.

dyu mean internet explorer, or windows explorer? were you trying to open from desktop icons? can u open IE from the start menu [if it is there]?

dyu mean internet explorer, or windows explorer? were you trying to open from desktop icons? can u open IE from the start menu [if it is there]?

Windows explorer. I heard through looking through heaps of information that if windows explorer does not work than internet explorer won't work as well, but i've always stuck to firefox. my desktop icons are non-existant, the same goes for my taskbar. To get to firefox i have to open task manager and then i have to type in 'firefox.exe.' if i do this with explorer i get a taskbar for half a second and it disappears as quickly as it came.

Okay so I got my Hijackthis log:

What did you do to remove the file referred to in this entry?

O23 - Service: Power Manager (PowerManager) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Anyway, restart hijackthis, do a Scan Only and place a checkmark against that entry, and press Fix Checked.
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe should not have been on your sys.... it is a baddie. The real one is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ .
Rclick on a blank space on your desktop [heh!..that should be easy... :)], go properties, desktop, customise desktop, web, and delete any entries shown there. In the general tab does selecting any checkboxes work? Can you place a new icon for any pgm or file on your desktop, and does it then work? eg if from anexplorer window you lclick and drag a filename onto the desktop do you get an icon? and will it open the file?
==Get Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
- install it. Update it. Explore what settings you can change in it [via the cogwheel icon up top, if you are comfortable with that... you won't hurt anything, but for the present please keep the default settings]. Put an icon on your desktop for regular use.
Run Adaware, doing a full system scan and finally remove all that it finds [rclick in the scan results window and select all, go next..]. If Adaware finds anything apart from cookies or your MRU list then, after removing those items you should repeat the scan [and removal] and so on until it comes up clean.
If you have or can borrow an XP install cd of the same update level [eg SP1 for you...tsk!], either M$ or an OEM will do, go start > run, type [paste..]
sfc /scannow and Enter. Insert the cd and press enter as many times as it takes.

When finally you get sorted, pls update to SP2 [get the cd from M$, or dl the update...], get all the windows security updates, and - Java update!!! This is for security reasons. Go control panel > java > update, & press update now. Restart after installing the update, and then go into control panel again, add/remove pgms and remove all old versions of java. Vsn 1.6.0.1 is current....

I did only a scan and clicked fix the above mentioned, and restarted and when i re-ran hijack this it showed up again. I take it that isn't supposed to happen?

From our points of view - no! From its viewpoint? hah!, it's just doing its job as it knows it.
===Download SDFix from here: http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe
and save it to your desktop. Dclick SDFix.exe and choose Run to extract it to %systemdrive%, which commonly will be C:\
Reboot into safe mode with command prompt. Type:
services.msc -and press Enter. In the services window find Power Manager, rclick the line, go properties, and in that window select Stop, set the startup type to Disabled, Apply and Ok.
Still in safe mode, run hijackthis Scan only and repeat the fix from my previous post.
==Open the extracted SDFix folder, C:\SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script. Type Y to begin the cleanup.
You will be prompted to press any key to Reboot - the pc will then restart.
The tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished; press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
Restart the pc in normal mode. Make now a fresh hijackthis log and post it, along with the contents of the file Report.txt here.
[If you ran Spyware Doctor that should have removed the associated trojan.]
Could you please also reply to my icon questions in the previous post, and let me know the adaware scan results.

I ran everything in the above post and then saw the part where you mentioned spyware doctor. I don't have that and therefore i don't think the trojan was removed.

Spyware Doctor? Oh, yes you do have it, I can see it - just go to add/remove pgms if you wish to uninstall it.

Use HT to fix this one - it should have gone after your first startup after you installed windows:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SRFirstRun] rundll32 srclient.dll,CreateFirstRunRp

CCleaner
===Get CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ - and put it in a new folder. You should aim to keep this one for general use. I set it from the install checkboxes to only open from the recycle bin. It's neater that way.
Now run Ccleaner from the recycle bin rclick menu using its default settings [if you set up CCleaner as i suggested, rclicking the bin icon should give you the Open CCleaner option...]. Select the Cleaner icon and the Windows tab; press Run Cleaner. Next select the Applications tab and Run Cleaner again.
[For future quick temp file cleaning select the options you wish to use. Note that CCleaner is also a free registry cleaner. Explore all its options, but skip the prefetch folder cleaning option. That one is a furphy, much loved on some websites, but cleaning it is unnecessary because windows automatically dumps old unused entries anyway, they can do no harm, and further, if there is no prefetch entry for an app you wish to load then your sys will just be a lil bit slower loading it. And an entry will then be generated anyway.]

Now rename hijackthis.exe to imabunny.exe and post a fresh log.

Is Explorer working now? Are you having any other problems? Do your desktop icons link correctly?

When finally you get sorted, pls update to SP2 [get the cd from M$, or dl the update...], get all the windows security updates, and - Java update!!! This is for security reasons. Go control panel > java > update, & press update now. Restart after installing the update, and then go into control panel again, add/remove pgms and remove all old versions of java. Vsn 1.6.0.1 is current....

I'm gonna upgrade, I know I gotta do it I just need to get this sorted first. I ran ccleaner but it still won't run. Here's a fresh hijackthis log, what is the point of renaming it? Is this actually necessary?

Yes, i would not ask otherwise - some malware detect hijackthis initialising and stop so as to hide from it. Please do and repost.

Actually, before you post a new hijackthis log please do these things:
===GET AVG antispyware 7.5 here.. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5 -the link is almost at the bottom of the page , avgas 7.5.0.50. Install it and UPDATE it.
Start AVG A-S 7.5;
-under Scanner/ Settings please set Recommended actions to Quarantine, and run the scan.
-click Apply all actions and then save the log file. Post the log file.

Combofix
===Download this file: http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
...or from here: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
-- to run it dclick combofix.exe and follow the prompts to start it. When finished, it will produce a log - post that log in your next reply.
A word of caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Your firewall had a lot of strange entries in it which enabled them to contact the net, but i see no trace of a firewall in use now. Are you relying upon window' firewall? It is a great thing right up until the moment you get infected, and then it is just false security. Get a good one - Zonealarm free, or Kerio. Now.
Please uninstall Soulseek and delete its folder from program files. It may be valid but i don't trust it with the spelling error in its parameter.
Navigate to and delete these files [you may have to do it in safe mode]
