While I was using Mozilla Firefox today I got a popup telling me to download Win Anti-virus, so I closed firefox via task manager and ran Adaware. About 30 seconds into the scan I had accumulated 9 critical objects when an error message popped up telling me Windows NT had to shutdown now, and it gave me a 60 second countdown. Attempting to remove whatever I had caught during the scan before the shutdown, I stopped the adaware scan and selected all objects and clicked the proceed button to get rid of them, but as soon as I did that my computer started to shut down.

So the when the computer had rebooted I tried scheduling a boot-time scan with Avast!. Everything seemed to work fine but when the system rebooted the Avast! scan didn't run. I tried again and the same thing happened.

Seeing System Restore as my only option I went into the registry editor to see if something had disabled it. There was a DisableSR registry there so I deleted it and tried to run system restore: didn't work. So I rebooted in Safe Mode with command prompt and tried to run it from there and it gives me the message "System Restore cannot protect your computer."

Based on these symptoms it was suggested that it might be a Vundo.

Under recommendation from someone on this site I downloaded and ran HijackThis. The log file is as follows:

Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong and how to fix it?

EDIT: The wikipedia entry on the Vundo trojan states "It infects victims' computers by exploiting a vulnerability in Sun Java 1.4 and earlier versions". I just downloaded Java for the first time within the last few weeks. Is it possible that this is linked to the infection?

Your system is infected and system restore doesnt work because its also infected by spyware and virus. Update defenition file of virus scan you are using and start scan then fix regedit, taskmanager, folder option problems through this site :
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

EDIT: The wikipedia entry on the Vundo trojan states "It infects victims' computers by exploiting a vulnerability in Sun Java 1.4 and earlier versions". I just downloaded Java for the first time within the last few weeks. Is it possible that this is linked to the infection?

Yes.

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

I ran VundoFix and it didn't find any infected files. Is there anything else on the hijackthis log that looks suspicious, or any other ideas as to what's going on?

Here is the combo fix log:

--- E O F ---

Can you please do the following.

===============

When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, up to service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccurring in the future.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1964FFB0-D3C0-EC68-A5C0-BFEB544D9B02} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

I downloaded Spyware Blaster as well as SmitFraudFix and followed your instructions with HijackThis. Here are the results of the SmitFraudFix scan:

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Scanning for wininet.dll infection

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» End

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Here is the SmitFraudFix cleaning rapport:

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

I see the 024 entry still in your log. Did you have problems deleting it?
