I have a Dell 4600c with XP Home edition. I am now seeing a problem while logged onto my ISP (AOL Broadband) cable. When I try to go to MSN or some other sites I get a message that says"

"Cannot find server or DNS error - Internet Explorer"

I have to restart my system to clear this and allow me to proceed. It works for awhile but then later I again get the above message. Please if someone could walk me through the steps to correct this I would be grateful.

In order to walk you through the steps to fix it, one would first have to know what is going wrong. My guess is that it has something to do with that godawful broadband connection you have, but I digress. My suggestion is to do a couple of little tests. When you are connected and everything is working ok open a command prompt and issue an ipconfig /all command. Write down the entries for your ip address and that of your default gateway and dns servers. You did not say if you are using a router, so I will assume you are not. Next, when it fails, open another command prompt and attempt to ping your default gateway address. If the ping is successful attempt to ping each of your dns servers. If that is successful try to ping the site by name that you were trying to reach by name. i.e if you were trying to go to http://www.daniweb.com then type in "ping daniweb.com" no http://www or quotes. If dns is successful then it will show on the first line of the response the IP address for daniweb.com. Keep in mind that not all web servers will return a ping response but you should still get the address like I said. If you can ping some Internet addresses successfully and not others your ISP is probably having a problem. If you can't ping anything you have a network failure and not a dns problem. Try pinging your own address, if that works but you can't ping the default gateway it's your ISP connection. Come back with what results you can get and we'll look at it further.

Bentkey,

Here is a detailed account of the problem that I am having. I do indeed use AOL broadband through a cable router (Actiontec). Once I sign onto AOL I can usually go from site to site without issue. But if I go to MSN and sign in, I get this message "cannot find server or DNS error - Internet Explorer" I then cannot go any site that would use Internet Explorer. I then reboot my system and the problem is cleared up for a period of time. It then returns and I must again reboot to clear. I have been reading on this and found two sites that I am in the process of using. ONe is Mirco ? and the other is Panda ?. Micro found 14 viruses mostly trojan that could not be cleaned so I deleted them. I am in the process of running the Panda site now.
I appreciate your help and will work with you but please understand that I will need alot of help since I am not too computer savy. Thanks

Once you've finished the online scans, do the ping test as bentkey suggested. When you post the results of trying the pings, please be very specific as to what happened.

In the mean time, you might also want to have a read through many of the threads in our Security forum to familiarize yourself with the issues revolving around spyware/adware/etc. Those malicious programs can play holy hell with your network connectivity (among other things), and might very well be the root of your problem.

I tried the two applications and to no avail. The problem is still there. I need someone to walk me through the steps to correct this issue. I do not have much experience with computer technology and terms like "ping" and "hijack" are foreign to me.

Please help.......Thanks

I tried to add both bentkey and DMR to my contact list through this site and cannot. Both give me the message "cannot find server or DNS error - Internet Explorer"

I was able to finally figure out how to use Hijack. Here is my first log;

Do I need to start a log in the security section for this????

Well, you won't get much help with hijackthis logs in this forum. You may try the Security forum for that. As far as a ping command is concerned, it is very easy.

1) open a command prompt window. To do this, click Start/Run and type in "cmd" without the quotes.
2) type in "ping" and a space and the address you wish to test. Like this.

PING 192.168.1.1

or

PING daniweb.com

then press "enter" and the results will be returned. There are some options to the ping command which are worth knowing, but you don't need those for this test. These types of tests may seem strange, but they give valuable clues to exactly what is happening during a failure. Networking is complicated and guessing just doesn't help much.

Do I need to start a log in the security section for this????

Yup- your infested with malware, which could definitely be the root of your problems.

I'll move this entire thread to the Security forum now. Buckle up....

Hello,

I tried to ping msn. I went to start/run and entered cmd. I then entered ping msn.com and enter. It tried 4 attempts and came back 100% failed. I then tried to go from AOL to a Bank of America site and could not. I got the same message "Cannot find server or DNS error Internet Explorer
What now???????

I pinged msn again and got the following:

- Have you checked with AOL just to make sure that they aren't having problems with the DNS servers you are using?

- Try the ping by IP address instead of URL and tell us what happens:

ping 207.68.172.246

- Reboot into safe mode and, for every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Also delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.
- Empty your Recycle Bin.
- Reboot normally.

- Download SpyBot, Ad Aware, and CWShredder (links are in my sig below). Run the programs and have them fix everything they find.

- Run HJT again and post a fresh log.

Here are the results of the ping:

Thanks for helping DMR.... I am not sure how well I did on my first task since I was not sure how to do it. I was able to reboot in safe mode. I tried to delete the rest. I then ran the programs except the CWShredder. I could not access the link you provided.

I ran another Hijackthis log. Here are the results:

Next?????? Thanks again for helping me DMR. This is so frustrating.

OK- ipconfig indicates that you have two active network adapters, the first (the Wireless) apparently hooked to a local router, and the second (PPP/SLIP) apparently connected directly to an DSL broadband modem. Is the router on the local (192.168.) network connected to the Net as well?

Can you verify this and give us as much specific information as possible conncering your network/Internet connection setup, and let us know which connection is giving you the problems?

I do not have a network. I have one computer that is connected to my cable modem through a actiontec router. The computer that I am having problems with is connected to the router via a wireless adaptor. I use Bright House for service with AOL as the ISP. I do not have a DSL line.

This made me ask about the possibility of another network interface/connection:

PPP adapter {81909DBB-C61F-4B2B-9240-EB4F4D03A990}:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Inte
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.166.181.160
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.166.181.160
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 205.188.146.146
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

That entry isn't normal for a machine which only has an Ethernet or Wireless connection to a broadband router.

You might try disabling the DHCP server function of your router and just manually set your IP info in your network connection's TCP/IP properties. With only one (or a few) machines on a network, connectivity is often more reliable that way. Here's a description of how to do that:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_tcpip_pro_manualconfig.mspx

When following the above instructions, these are the values you should use:

IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 205.188.146.146

As for your HJT log, it looks like SpyBot and Ad Aware zapped everything but WeatherBug; remove the program using the Add/Remove Programs control Panel and then delete the entire C;\Program Files\AWS folder if it still exists.

Run HJT again, and If the following entries still exist, have HJT fix them:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe 1
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {2B96D5CC-C5B5-49A5-A69D-CC0A30F9028C} (MiniBugTransporterX Class) - http://download.weatherbug.com/mini...ransporter.cab?

I am not sure how to remove this. I went into my router and used the advanced settings and disabled the DHCP settings. I tried to read the article that your recommended but after line one I was reading greek. I know that this system came with a network setting and am wondering that if the LAN is disabled will it cause issues.

As far as the problem with "Cannot find server or DNS error" I have not had an issue in three days. I am not sure if we fixed it or is since I live in Florida that the problem has left the state for Frances. Thanks DMR for all your help in this and hope that we can continue to fine tune my sysstem until it is right.

System is now clean. I have a couple of things that pop up when restarting system like cannot find wildtangent file etc. I am sure that these are programs that we deleted. I am not sure if they require work to remove or if we should leave them alone. What are your thoughts?????????

For the startup error messages, look in the "startup" folder uder the Programs menu of the Start button. If you see any shortcuts there to programs you've deleted, delete the shortcuts too.

Also- sorry, but I missed a couple of entries in your log which would give those errors; run HJT again and have it fix them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AEIWLSTA.EXE] AEIWLSTA.EXE START
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
