Here's my problem: When I'm using Windows XP, I can only connect to the internet using certain programs.

These programs have no problem connecting to any remote website:

  • ping (using the command line)
  • Firefox 3.0.4
  • Skype 3.8.0.139
  • Gmail Notifier 1.0.25.0
  • Zend Development Environment 5.5.0 270 (FTP)
  • Windows XP (Adding an FTP server to "My Network Places")

These programs have problems connecting to the outside internet:

  • iTunes 8.0.1.11 (When clicking the "Store" button, it says "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store". Also, podcasts don't update and album artwork is not downloaded)
  • IE 7.0.5730.13
  • IE 6 (I don't know the version because it was installed using MultipleIEs and it inherited the IE7 version number)
  • Opera 9.24 8816
  • Safari 3.1.2 (525.21)
  • Google Chrome 0.3.154.9
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0.175 (It does update successfully sometimes)

This is my "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file (IP address 192.168.0.3 is my web development server, which is an Ubuntu box in the other room):

127.0.0.1 localhost

Other important (or not) information:

  • All of those browser have no problem connecting to my development sites that are hosted within my home network.
  • I tried to access http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ using Google Chrome and it *worked*. Then I tried to go to http://www.mozilla.org/ and nothing. Then I tried to go to http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ again and nothing.
  • The computer that host the Windows XP install dual boots with Ubuntu Gutsy. Ubuntu has no problems whatsoever.
  • The Ubuntu server (that I referred to above) also connects fine.
  • I'm using Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3

Things I've tried so far:

  • I made "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" Read-only and not. No difference.
  • I've tried turning off Windows Firewall. No difference.
  • I've tried closing AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. No difference.

OK, most likely this is a virus.

Pls do the following:

1. - Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

2. - Download hijackthis and post the log.

In your reply, post the logs (in this order):
1. - Malware Bytes Log
2. - Hijackthis Log

Thanks,

Cohen

The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can't connect to the internet to update but I'm letting it do a full scan now, unupdated. I'll post the logs shortly.

Here are the logs.

Hello,

Next time you post log, pls don't attach them, pls post the logs in a reply! If you have to do 2 replies containing logs, pls do that.

From that, it has done a few things, and the hijackthis i can see has some unneeded processes running.....

Now with my training, i can't issue any further instructions...'

So pls wait for Crunchie or someone else to come along to give you further instructions...

I'll let Crunchie know of this thread for you.

Thanks,

Cohen

Thanks, cohen. I appreciate it.

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.2:80

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Search for...

ALCMTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

===============

Download LSPfix from here
On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox, then click Finish.

-

Reboot.

See if you can update MBAM and scan again if yes.

That worked perfectly! Wow! Thank you so much.

Time to catch up on my podcast updates.

I really appreciate both of your help. Your solutions were very informed and to-the-point.

Just for everyone's information, which part of the fix actually fixed the problem? Removing the proxyserver entry, or LSPfix?

Just for everyone's information, which part of the fix actually fixed the problem? Removing the proxyserver entry, or LSPfix?

This part did it:

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.2:80

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

No worries. Thanks :)
