Windows Update should tell you which component failed to install. See if you can locate a standalone installer for it on Microsoft's site and try a manual installation.
Which version of Windows are you trying to update?
What's the exact error message you're seeing?

Another way is to go to Control -> Program and features -> Show updates -> Uninstall updates. Than download and install the updates again.
