Does it count that I didn't expect Blu-ray to win the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD war? (Not that Blu-rays are even a thing nowadays either.)
I feel like this question is an exercise in checking my stock portfolio and seeing what tech stocks I invested in and ended up taking a loss. As of now, my biggest loss is Nextdoor. I really thought that app would have seriously taken off post-COVID.

It wasn't built on a pile of historical mistakes that had to be constantly carried forward in the name of backward compatibility.
And ofter that, OS/2. Under the hood it was light years ahead of Windows. Unfortunately, configuration was all done through arcane text files. Windows had better window dressing (sorry) but was absolute shit under the hood.

I was working at Sony around the time this was happening and you might not know that it was the Playstation 3 that won the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD battle. At the time players for both formats were priced starting at ~£500 but then Sony put a Blu-ray player in the Playstation 3 and priced it at ~£350. They essentially created a much cheaper barrier to entry for their format.
Sony lost the VHS vs Betamax format battle in the 80s and they weren't going to lose again.

Yup, I remember that. I had an Xbox 360 with its HD-DVD player. The same way Sony bet on Blu-ray, Microsoft bet on HD-DVD. I thought, for sure, Microsoft's Xbox was going to beat out Sony's Playstation.
