When the system is powered up the BIOS works fine, but shortly after the Windows splash screen is displayed the screen goes black.
The system will work correctly with an external monitor (but laptop screen still black).
Powering up and pressing F8 during BIOS load then selecting “Safe Mode with networking” allows the system to be used, but in a rather restricted fashion. The screen does not go black at any stage.
The fault occurred spontaneously and no changes had been made to either hardware or software.
It seems as if the software system seems to be deciding that the lid is closed when it isn't. Could it be a faulty reed switch?
