I had connected an additional 40GB HDD to my computer as slave, and checked all connections before power on. As soon as i switched on the power, smoke appeared from the logic board of this HDD, immediately i switched off the power. No more experiment done after this. please advice me if I can use this HDD anymore. if yes how. (the system is not coming on with this HDD now.)

You better have it check with a computer technician.
Or if you have a multimeter at home/office, check for short circuit among all its power terminals.
