Quick, practical note for that builds on points from , and : a missing laptop key is usually fixable faster and cheaper than replacing the entire keyboard. The useful parts are the keycap (the visible top), the plastic retainer/hinge (the little white or clear scissor piece) and the underlying switch. Identifying which piece is missing or broken determines the next step.

Follow this quick checklist:

  • Look for the original keycap and the small retainer near the laptop (it often falls off nearby). Clean the area with compressed air so no debris prevents seating.
  • If the retainer is present and intact: align it into the rectangular slots on the keyboard base (match the tiny tabs), seat it gently until it clicks, then place the keycap on top and press down evenly until it snaps. A pair of pointed tweezers and steady pressure work best.
  • If the retainer is broken or missing: order a single replacement key/retainer for the exact laptop model (brand + full model from the sticker on the bottom + which Shift — left or right). Photos of the broken parts help sellers or repair shops match the correct hinge type. Salvaging a donor keyboard is another low-cost option.
  • Temporary workarounds: use the operating system’s on‑screen keyboard, plug in a cheap USB keyboard, or remap a seldom-used key with key-remapping software while waiting for parts.

Cautions: do not glue plastic parts (glue can foul the switch), avoid forcing metal clips, and stop if something resists — brittle retainers break easily. If multiple keys or the retainer mounts under the bezel are damaged, a full keyboard replacement or professional repair may be the safer route.

I think, you should try looking for a stand-alone key from the people who are repairing computers, or try to find it anywhere else, especially if it's a popular cpmputer model or an old model :) My girlfriend had similar problem few weeks ago..she was missing a backspace key for her dell(inspiron 1521) laptop. And guess what, she found it very quickly! so, try it first, before buying a new keyboard and save your money!

if it is just the shift key (there are two, one at either end of the keyboard so use the other one!) alternatively swap for a key that is not used (eg print screen or a - minus sign as there are two of those.) you will need to be careful in doing this!
other alterenative is to buy a wifi external keyboard...

I’m lucky my neighbors never ask for my laptop. Anyways, you can get a replacement key also, I know a perfect place for it. Check www.laptopkey.com
