I want everyone to know! I was having a problem for about a month where my computer cpu usage would spike to about 45 percent every 10 seconds, as long as explorer.exe was running. Typing tasklist /m in a console and looking through the dll files loaded with explorer.exe, i noticed the file smerg.dll didnt sound right. A quick google turned up nothing, as well as checking many anti-spyware web pages. This file was hidden completely from me, and I could not find it on my system. Finally, I came across Browser Sentinal 2, which was able to identify the file's location for me, and delete its associated registry entry. The location for me was c:\windows\help\smerg.dll. This file is NOT NORMALLY VISIBLE in windows, and in order to delete it, I needed to boot my computer from my windows XP cd, and follow along until it gave me the option to choose "recovery console". Once there, the file was visible, and I was simply able to delete it. No more CPU spikes!! I hope this is able to help everyone, because it took me hours upon hours to finally track it down. Cheers!
