I am a noob at Linux and I have installed Ubuntu onto my system. I can ping my modem and using the IP address I can ping www.optusnet.com.au. How can I set it up so I can browse the net by just typing www.google.com

it should work automatically just like in windows
Thats what i thought but it doesn't. Is there some sort of code to make it work to configure it or something?
uhh go into the panel and find networking (its under administration submenu) and have a look around. Im using ubuntu here with Cable Broadband and its fine.
if you have a windows pc you canfind out the IP of your DNS server and tupe it into your linux box
