I have a Dell dimension 4550 running Windows XP home edition Service Pack 1. I have been trying to get rid of spyware and pop-up adds and in the process i think i have deleted some files i needed, one of which is shell.dll.

I have downloaded a copy from www.dll-files.com and tried to replace the missing file by placing it in my window\system32 folder but it does not seem to work. The programs that i am trying to run still don't work. and i also got an error message saying i can not run 16 bit programs when i tried to install AVPE anti-virus.

Please help.

I don't know if this will work for shell.dll, but try the following command from a DOS prompt:

regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\shell.dll
