As the title suggests, XP freezes seemingly randomly. One time it froze a few seconds after logging into my XP account. Other times its frozen with the screen saver up, and most recently it froze while web surfing with firefox. After the latest freeze when I rebooted 3 command prompt windows showed up apparently blank and immediately closed themselves.

So does anyone know some steps to isolate the problem so that I can try to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

link in my signature has links to spybot and adaware ,download and run them first to remove any shi-t on the computer .

sounnd to me like an infection indeed. after cleaning let us know if this still happens

I have the most updated Spybot thats been run and is clean, I'm getting the AdAware from your sig and I'll run that too.

i also suggest CCleaner ,to remove all files/programs in temp folders ,and temp internet files .
www.ccleaner.com

I used that CCleaner, that got a lot of crap. AdAware found 11critical things I had it fix the rest were cookies, I ran a second full scan and its clean. I'll repost if I have anymore freezing problems.

The freezing problem is still here, I would also like to add that at startup there appears to be a chance that my comp will freeze right before it starts to load windows. As in the loading splash screen never comes up or fades in partially before freezing. This startup freezing seems to happen most frequently when using the reset button after my comp has frozen.

If there is anymore information you guys need to try know whats going on say so, cause this is really annoying.

Hope that helps.

This startup freezing seems to happen most frequently when using the reset button after my comp has frozen.

This sounds to me like something is overheating. When you reset right after the PC freezes, the PC is still 'hot'., so the change of crashing increases.
Try running something that takes up a lot of resources, like a game or something. Does it crash more often?
Do all your fans still run? Try cleaning your PC, remove all the dust from fans.
Did you add hardware recently?

Niek

The only recent hardware is 7950GT, thats been installed and doing find for 4+ months and has the latest drivers, running resource intensive applications like games, supreme commander/ team fortress 2 etc do not seem to increase the likelihood of freezing.

I don't think its overheating because this morning it froze right at loading windows. (as the splash tries to fade in)

As far as dust goes the comp is clean, all fans work.

what anti virus program are you running. download everest and it will tell your Pc temp and post them here

Avast is my anti-virus I have the old Everest Home Edition that I don't think they have anymore.

The gpu usually idles at ~60-64c and it has frozen during those times. CPU mid 30's and Mobo low 40's

do you have encryption or compression on the hard drive....turn off if you do. Also run chkdsk /f let the pc reboot and run the check. then try to install again. I suggest you try downloading the Sp again or just get it straight from the Microsoft update page

Try to install what? I've recently run chkdsk /f /r it came clean, and if you mean reinstall SP2 for XP I suppose I could try that. Also I don't know how to check for encryption/compression on my HDD.
