reported very slow outgoing mail on Verizon DSL and that Outlook Express will not compact folders. Reinstalling OE is rarely the quickest fix. The problem usually falls into two groups: (A) mail-server/connection delays, or (B) a local Outlook Express store or antivirus/firewall interaction that slows or blocks SMTP traffic. ’s idea of isolating the problem with a fresh profile is useful for (B), but there are faster checks to run first.

A few targeted isolation steps that help identify the cause:

  • Send a small plain-text message through Verizon webmail (or the ISP web interface). Fast there = client-side issue; slow there = ISP/server issue.
  • Test SMTP responsiveness to the configured outgoing server (replace with the actual server name):
    telnet your.smtp.server 25

A quick greeting means the network path is OK; long pauses or timeouts point to ISP throttling, DNS, or port/SMTP routing problems (also check whether the account requires SMTP authentication or an alternate port such as 587).

OE-specific causes and workarounds:

  • Stuck or very large messages in Outbox (hidden attachments, embedded images) can block the queue. Clearing/moving them often restores normal send speed.
  • Antivirus or personal firewall SMTP/email-scanning modules frequently introduce large delays. Temporarily disable the mail-scanning feature (or exit the AV) to test whether send speed improves.
  • A failed compact usually indicates a corrupt .dbx store. Back up the store files (typical location: C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<GUID>\Microsoft\Outlook Express\), then move the suspect .dbx out of the folder and restart OE to create a fresh store. Import or repair the old .dbx with a DBX-repair tool if needed. Also verify free disk space and folder/file permissions before compacting.

If these checks do not resolve the issue, the fresh Windows profile suggested by will confirm whether the problem is per-user data. Long term, consider migrating from Outlook Express to a supported client or webmail to avoid repeated data-file corruption. Always back up mail files before making changes.

As A Further Not To My Message , I Cannot Compact When I Try Under Outlook,,,,will Not Compact!

Hi,

Try creating a new profile and then configure OE again. Possibly the emails being sent out are bulky (possibly with large attachments) thats causing this. You might also try an SFC /Scannow.

Sam.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN A NEW PROFILE???????? I CANNOT COMPACT THE MESSAGES EITHER ., WHEN I HIT COMPACT, I CANNOT GET IT TO COMPACT., ARE THERE WORKAROUNDS WHAT IS

You might also try an SFC /Scannow. ????? NEED MORE INFORMATION..

Create a new user profile:
Click Start-> Control Panel-> User Accounts-> Create a new account with Administrator rights. Log in with this new profile and reconfigure OE and then try sending the emails again.

Run SFC /Scannow
Insert Windows XP CD in top CD/DVD drive.
Click Stsrt->Run-> Type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and press enter. When the scan is done, it will disappear. Reboot computer at this point.

Sam.
