Computer freezes up every time after viewing two or three web pages (like in the 1980s). First month I could go to C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and delete everything and all would be OK. This week that has no effect.

Win98 4.10.2222 A
Gateway 2000 Pentium II 128 MB RAM
32 bit
No disc compression
C drive - 500 MBs free
D drive - 660 MBs free
E drive - 1.5 GBs free
Drives came like that in 1997 - I didn't ask for partitions.

Only programs intalled last two years were this week to try to find solution -
SequoiaView
JimJams.com/ASH
SpySweeper (don't keep it running, only start it up when I use it)

Already had -
Ad-Aware6.0
1-Click-Fixer Plus
McAffee
Quicken On-Line backup

I empty all caches daily, run above programs at least twice a week. Have been deleting all unused programs (my install) this week trying to obtain a larger swap file, but to no avail. Thanks for any and all advice!

it seems your computer is old one. your cpu fan might not work as swift as it should if there is no virus then you should check fan speed. you can try by changing your cpu fan and update ur antivirus
try this
best of luck

Thank you, but I think the problem is more in the way that my visited web sites are being recorded in C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

Instead of just the cookie being listed after I visit a web site, every item that is used to create the page is listed, sometimes 1,000 small files - every jpg gif and so on. Everything that you would save if it were your own webpage, and you needed a back-up copy.

I have reinstalled Win98 and WinME on the two but no change.

This started about a month ago on both my laptop and my desktop. My brother has XP and has lost over 7 GB recently. All three computers are all on a home wireless network together which has worked perfectly for over a year.

He says he doesn't have a folder called Temporary Internet Files on his XP to see if it is the same problem - I know more than he does about computers but he is not eager for me to work on his. He has tried all the same virus detectors, etc., as I but nothing shows up. I sent him several of the fixes mentioned on the XP board.

Here's the log file from my desktop from HijackThis

Computer freezes up every time after viewing two or three web pages (like in the 1980s). First month I could go to C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files and delete everything and all would be OK. This week that has no effect.

Open IE go to tools /internet options /advanced ,scroll down to browsing section and check of to empty temp internet folder when you close the browser ,save you from having to empty it manually .
Also make sure you have latest windows/and IE updates install on you computer

He says he doesn't have a folder called Temporary Internet Files on his XP to see if it is the same problem - .

for you brother to see his folder get him to follow this path .
C:\Documents and Settings\Home\Local Settings

He will need to go to tools in mycomputer ,folder options /view and check to show all hidden files and folders to find this path .

Also, try running Disk Defragmenter and scan disk with surface scan. Helps keep the HDD in shape. Also try emptying the temp folder
