@CaperJack, but my computer is in my homegroup. Why I can't access my computer itself.
I Tried doing what you said and it says problem is network related and it wanted me to troubleshoot that first. When i tried that, it says computer clock in not in sync with standard local time (the trouble shooter is wrong here)
I think some network related service is disabled. If anybody can think in that direction ???
Hi LJ, I tried and it doesn't help.
You haven't created or joined a homegroup.
I am in the homegroup, other person can access my laptop
You're not using a homegroup, and the folder or printer you're trying to access has not been shared
drives on both computer are shared]
Network discovery is turned off
lolz
Password-protected sharing is turned on
again lolz
The computers aren't in the same workgroup
then how can he access mine? not sure how to check this
You don't have permission to access the file or folder you're trying to access
yes, i dont even have permission to access my own computer, see the screenshot
Group Policy might be blocking the connection
Don't know about this. why would it block one computer and not other
Your computer doesn't have the latest updates for your router
Not sure what that means
Hi Bal, I created another admin account but I get the same message.
Hi Jingda, yes that is the problem.
I have 2 laptops A and B, both running windows 7.
I can access A from B, but can't access B from A. Strange thing is, if I go through network, I cant even access A from A.
This is the error message that I get.
A (or B) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contract the administrator....
The specified network provider name is invalid.
Also attached a screenshot.
Hi
I am trying to compress a file. But I want my original file to be there.
eg. if I have file named file1
then after compressing I should have 2 files:
file1
file1.z
(I googled and tried gzip and zcat but couldn't do it)
Thanks
just write the subroutine with arguements
sub importData()
fileName = Application.GetOpenFilename("Text Files (*.csv),*.csv", , "Please selec text file (in .csv format)...")
If fileName = "False" Then Exit Sub 'User pressed Cancel on the open file dialog
'Calling the subroutine now:
call ImportTextFile(stringName, SepSymbol)
End Sub
Yeah it was and I was trying to find it under program files.
Lack of knowledge with intention of doing a search on the minimal data (only program files, not whole C drive) took so much time of ours. But good in a way that I got to learn things that I did not think of. Thanks to you and other who posted
thanks ddanbe... That helped me in creating a batch file to compile my programs. Actually I found csc.exe in the following folder
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727
(version number can vary from system to system)
Thanks you. Wish I could help but I don't know anything about "searching on data of a website"
Thanks Mitja, Actually I am trying to compile .cs files (and not .csproj files or solutions). Sorry for not mentioning that in the very first post.
thanks guys... (and gals :P). Actually I mistyped...Should have typed "how to search in a particular forum"!!! well thanks anyways as your replies answers my question. Just one thing that I never had problem in finding that thing earlier. This clicking on blank search box is not so intuitive, atleast to me.
Hi
I am back at Daniweb after a long long time. Reason for posting here is that I recollect vaguely that earlier I had an option to search under a particular thread. Needless to say that would reduce my search results by a lot. Now I cant seem to find that option. I am feeling little dumber over my inability to find that option.
Hi
I have just started C# (again) and written a small program. I have installed Microsoft Visual C# 2008 Express Edition. Now I want to compile and run my program but "start debugging (F5)" option is faded. Also I can't find any csc.exe file in the main directory where Visual C# 2008 is installed. Please help!
Thanks
Hi again...
While writing the above thread.... one thing came to my mind... may be I have virus on my computer (Desktop) as I did not have any other antivirus other than claimwin for last 6 months or so. No internet security software as well.
So i tried to go to kaspersky website and ... i could not open it. Bit defender... same thing.... mcafee same thing... pc celin same thing... I could not open any antivirus websites. Even microsoft website I could not open. So i had some doubt that i had virus. I tried opening these sites from my laptop and there they were opening without any problem (same modem). I checked DNS settings on my computer and laptop, they were different. I changed the dns settings of my computer but that did not help. I was sure there is virus but I was still in dark about whether this virus cause the hang problem or it was something else.
So I checked my hosts.txt file but it was OK. I knew the virus is beyond my scope of knowledge which is actually very less about computers and everything.
I downloaded kaspersky trial version using torrents, but then I couldn't activate even the trial version itself. (Ofcourse anything related to kaspersky was blocked). Then i tried ping, tracert etc for kaspersky.com but they could not resolve the name. Then I asked for IP address of kaspersky from a friend and bang !!! …

Hi
I am having this problems since around 5-6 days. My computer gets hang, mouse pointer gets lost (invisible), and key strokes work after a lag of 1 sec to 3-4 secs. After a few seconds (say from 3 secs to 10-12 secs), it will automatically get to normal state, like nothing weird has ever happened.
This mostly happens when I am playing AOE II, (Age of Empires TC, a game released in 2000 does not need much resources of computer, runs on 128 RAM). Then this also happens (with lesser frequency) while I use Google Chrome or Firefox. (I seldom use IE).
Also sometimes keyboard will work and I can see mouse pointer but cant move mouse pointer. This has happened only 3 times, and everytime i needed restart to fix it. (the problem above this has occured like atleast 30-40 times)
I downloaded and tried to fix it with CCleaner, though it freed up some space, but did not help me in getting rid of the problem.
Following are the config and settings of my computer.
windows xp pro, version 2002, SP2
computer: Intel P4, 2.40 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Gigabyte mother board, intel chipset 845.
pretty old but this is what I have.
I have uninstalled my antivirus -claimwin or something- 2 days ago, which anyways did not seem to do any work, in attempt to free up the load. So I have no antivirus installed as of …
When you use VPN simulators like Hamachi and Tunngle, mostly you just need to put aoe (age2x_1.exe) as an exception in your firewall. (Also the simulator as well).
But if you want to use clients like Voobly (previously IGZones), Game park etc., most of the time you will need to configure your router settings. Best way is to know how to change your router settings using googling. For non-techi person, it might be a little confusing in the beginning but if you try 2-3 times, you should be able to get it done.
PS: You can read my other posts as well, hope they help...
Thanks Scott!
you have boosted my confidence and increased my knowledge and may be saved our company a lot of money. Depends upon how I can convince management about these things. Disconnecting VPN will come in handy as an extra measure
Thank you very much!
They want to setup a VPN, and then transfer the data over sftp. First I thought these how these two different protocols can go together, but then I got to know from somewhere a VPN can implement sftp to transfer the data, providing double security. Is that correct ?
After we get the data, only 3-4 members will be allowed to use (read/edit) that data. Is is possible that admin creates a folder for that and give access to only selected people to it? ( I mean thats possible, they already do it on our LAN, but I don't know how insecure is that). And if server is hacked, is it same whether data was pulled by us or pushed by the bank?
After we do the analysis, data will be deleted, and we will send them the final reports through emails. (Bank will not pull back the data or anything from our server)
Hi
I tried creating sftp server using OpenSSH and I get some errors.
First I tried on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, R2, SP1 and then on Windows XP Professional, SP2 and the error is same.
Installation went smoothly on both the OS (after a few complications, see note at bottom), but when I tried to start the service, I get the following error:
Could not start the OpenSSH server service on local computer.
Error 193: 0xc1.
Here is the log of error from EventViewer (System)
The OpenSSH Server service failed to start due to the following error:
OpenSSH Server is not a valid Win32 application.
I followed the procedure as given on the following websites:
http://www.digitalmediaminute.com/article/1487/setting-up-a-sftp-server-on-windows
http://www.xenocafe.com/tutorials/windows/openssh_sftp_server/index.php
Note:If you try creating the server by yourself you might face complications while editing the passwd and group file:
Instead of following:
mkgroup –l >> ..etc/group
mkpasswd –l –u username >> ..etc/passwd
you could use:
mkgroup –l >> "C\:Program Files\OpenSSH\etc\group"
mkpasswd –l –u username >> "C\:Program Files\OpenSSH\etc\passwd"
I guess you can use both backward and forward slash.
Thanks sknake,
That helps and I have some more info, so I was wondering if it can give you better understanding of the situation and guide me.
We have servers sitting in our company premises in a secured server room. We do not use it to publish websites but to keep data of various companies over which different teams (in the company itself) do analytics and other stuff. Earlier we use to pull data either through offline transfer (like hard disk/DVD), or by pulling the data from the server of other company (using vpn or sftp). Now there is a bank which wont give us access to there server. They say they want to "push" the data to our company's server, instead of allowing us to "pull" the data from there server.
On that IT guys say, the place (server) where data will come is unsecure. They say, if we pull, then its ok, but if they push, then their data become unsecure as our server is a public server. (Which I don't think is, after reading your post).
One thing that is commonly said by him and you is that "if someone breaks in to IIS and gets administrative access to the server they could get at all of the websites". But as you mentioned its also possible in case of private server as well. I guess strong passwords and policies like regularly changing passwords can lower probability of this happening... right ?
Thanks …
Hi
What are these terms? What is the difference?
I am kind of new to servers but I understand what is a server, client, and transfer protocols like ftp, sftp, vpn etc. I have also created server using filezilla and transferred files using it, and I unsuccessfully tried creating sftp server using OpenSSH. (After doing all the stuff I got an error says, openSSH.exe is not valid windows executable.... something like that, I took help from here http://www.digitalmediaminute.com/article/1487/setting-up-a-sftp-server-on-windows, but that is a different issue I will create another thread for that, mentioned it just to give a background).
That being said, my company's IT guys is bothering our analytics team over these terms. They are saying our server is not secure, and they need some 5000 USD to buy and some monthly charges to maintain the same. (They say our existing server is a public server, I don't know what does that mean). I tried googeling but couldn't find a satisfying answer.
So please help me here.
Well nice to see that this code helped you.
And thanks for correcting the mistake.
Well I did not know about the semicolons, but excel does play with the quotes in the csv file. Interesting to note that it also plays with semi-colons.
actually u don't need that... u can see your hamachi ip at the top of hamachi window. Also whoever creates the game, should give all others his (hamachi) IP and the network he is into, and if others are present in the same network, they can join his game by entering his IP at aoe screen.
Some times you might find some1 cant join you even if he is in same hamachi network. that means he is still not connected to you. to confirm that right click on his nick and ping. if it doesnt ping then both/one of you should restart hamachi. if it pings then its your computer firewall problem.
ok.... that helps..
thanks again.
thanks...
Now I understand how it works on shell prompt.
I will try to find out if this works when written in a script.
edit: it works in scripts also...
thanks again.
thanks...
other than error handling there is only one line... chmod u+x $1
and that's how we learn... I spent more than 1 hour on this....
Thank you very much...
but i still want to know: how to concatenate two strings to make a command and then how to execute that command. Or do we need to always find a workaround.
Hi
I am new to unix and want to learn shell scripting.
Right now I am use cygwin for windows but sooner I will switch to ubantu.
So when I wrote my first script (just copied from the book I was reading), I came to know I have to give execute permission to the script file.
So now I want to create a script which will take the file as input and will just change the permissions such that It wont effect read/write permission but only grant the execute permissions.
So I tried to write something like this (code mixed with psuedocode is written below)
#GrantExPer
#Usage: GrantExPer <filename>
str1='ls -la ' #first string
str2=$1 # second string contains file name
echo $str2 # this works
comm1=$str1 $str2 #command1 by concatenating string 1 and string 2, this doesn't work for me
$comm1 #execute command1
var1=$1 #get output of the above command in some var1
#find out current permissions using var1 and calculate some integer $newPermission (which contains new permissions)
chmod $newPermission $str2 #str2 still contains file name I think
Please guide me for:
1. How to make a right command. I tried it by concatenate 2 strings. (line 4-7)
2. Then how to execute it. (line 8)
3. Is there any command which shows me file permissions in a number format like 644 rather than -rw-r--r--. To me number format seems easier to manipulate.
Thanks
Hi guys...
I actually got this already working. I just did not know how TimerObject_tick() function works. Now I know it constantly update itself (which is still funny and a little vague for me) after the interval we set.
Hi
I am trying to display time in a text box which updates itself every second. I am using visual C# and I am pretty new to it. (My first program in visual C#)
(Actually its part of a little bigger problem in which I have to implement a timer class, which will show me how much time has been elapsed since I have started the program. Again this elapsed time will update it every second)
I know this can be done using timer class but I don't know exactly how to use it.
I found a similar thread at DaniWeb, but I am stuck at "how to display it" and where are all the ticks thing that they talk about. Also I tried to use object browser but seems like I am unable to interpret what each thing displayed in object browser does.
So here is my code:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Threading;
namespace Timer
{
public partial class Timer : Form
{
public Timer()
{
InitializeComponent();
}
private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
String hours;
String minutes;
String seconds;
hours = DateTime.Now.Hour.ToString();
minutes = DateTime.Now.Minute.ToString();
seconds = DateTime.Now.Second.ToString();
textBox1.Text = "System Time - " + hours + ":" + minutes + ":" + seconds;
timer1.Enabled = false;
}
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
timer1.Enabled = true;
}
private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{ …
wow... I dint know that... thanks...
but this "free shell account" works very fine for me...
Hey thanks...
I have a Putty client. But I don't if there is a UNIX server which allows random users like me to login to them and use the UNIX OS.
btw this the link you sent seems good :)
Hi
I want to learn UNIX and UNIX shell scripting. But right now I can just read the tutorials as I don't have UNIX/LINUX at my computer. Is there any way by which I can try and test my UNIX commands and scripts over internet.
What I mean to say is there any online interface where I get a shell on my browser or using something like telnet, so that I can use UNIX OS on my windows OS without actually installing it (and without using Virtual Machine kind of things).
Thanks
Ok again it seems that Hijackthis works on my computer but network doesn't allow it to send log files directly to Trend micro website. I will try MBA - M tomorrow (at home right now).
Thanks gerbil. I got some of the administrative access today, which includes regedit, command prompt, and installation of programs and I am able to download things from some of the websites. (Still no control over the symantec antivirus installed in my computer)
So i tried the to change the home page to blank (and google also) using regedit, but the virus/worm resets it to http://www.socio.fusionace.com/ (which is different from original but it redirects my IE home page to that page only)
Then I downloaded Hijack this but when I click on Analyze this, it takes me to an error page.
(Answer - Error running Hijack This)
I do have hijackthis.log (changed to .txt to upload) and startuplist.txt whose contents are as attached.
I also tried to empty my windows/temp folder but there are two files which I couldn't remove.
these are
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\QosServ.log
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\hsperfdata_SYSTEM\1612 (no extension)
Seems like I can't even read those files.
Thanks

I agree jholland, but its my office computer and I don't seem to have all the rights to perform all these actions. (Also I tried to perform online scans, checked my task manager process lists, which are part of that list) Here I am not saying I have done some of things in that list, so you should do something for me... that would be ridiculous. I was just wondering if anyone have come across this problem before so that I could take help from their experience.
Hi
My IE homepage is set to the above mentioned page and resetting it to blank doesn't work. If you think there might be some danger in visiting this page, here are the contents(top 4 lines):
This Account Has Been Suspended
Why? There could be a few reasons why your account is suspended, the most common are...
Account Unpaid?
Unpaid accounts are suspended 10 days after the due date
however re-activation is INSTANT following payment, like this...
I found something on following website about this problem, but somehow I did not trust this website.
www.securitystronghold.com/gates/darker.html
I felt like the creator of both websites might be the same. And they might try to install something bad by prompting me to download there so called darker and svchost.exe removal tool. If somebody has tested this and trust them, then I will download their tool.
Also I feel there is some virus in my computer as I found wscript.exe in my task manager.This is my office computer and I have symantec anti-virus, but I don't like it. It anyways does a force scan every morning(over which I have absolutely no control) and does not find any virus.
I also tried ESET online scan but it completed in 0.00 secs, saying no threats have been found. I think my office network doesn't allow this kind of scanning. (As Kaspersky is still trying to get my computer configuration since …
The following website explain ActionScript while creating a game...
http://www.brighthub.com/internet/web-development/articles/11010.aspx
yeah this is not related to game development but I can answer your questions...
1. Turn off your windows firewall and Anti-virus firewall. Then you should be able to join games.
2. If you don't want to turn off firewalls, then you need to add exception, and open ports.
I know how this works for XP:
Go to: Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Exceptions
Click on Add program, Browse for hamachi executable and add it.
similarly add age2_x1.exe as exception.
Then click on add ports and open following ports
TCP Ports
2300-2400,47624
UDP Ports
2300-2400
Now try using Hamachi or direct ip to play the games.
I have never tried GameSpy, but there is one very-2 good client to play AOE-II online. It is called IGZ (www.igzones.com) Thousands of players are always online there. You can also try www.gamepark.eu
To play at igz and gamepark, you need to install 1.0c/1.0e patch. This patch is available at many website. (site #1 and 2 below). I believe Gamespy also uses this patch as all pro use this patch to play aoe. it makes online gaming hack proof to a little more extent.
PS: when you learn some tactics of the game You can also play with me :)

Thanks guys, I got the password from ISP long time back...
Zeroth:
Last time I could change it, as I remember the old password (current password at that point of time..) u know how passwords are changed... right ?
Now if your point is good, that secure passwords should not be recoverable, but as I have heard, and started to believe, that windows itself is not that secure.... So there might be ways to recover passwords in windows.
Question is why content vanish when Midi goes back to the page where she/he writes a post. And you know its not due to advertisements.
Your point is valid, but you pointed it out in reply of a question which was about some problem either in Midi's browser or in our website.
Become a DaniWeb donator and you can get rid of those annoying ads.
I don't think that's very mature post Mr. Ancient Dragon.
@ Midi...
I don't think thats a cache problem, as in my office I can't clean cache by myself, but I never faced a problem like yours. Wait for a response from someone who might know exact cause of your problem.
My Internet Service Provider (ISP) is "BSNL India" and they don't give me option to reset password when i forget it.
Day before yesterday I changed it, and luckily clicked on the remember password option. Now I have no idea what is my new password. I can access internet by cannot login to my ISP site to keep record of my internet usage which is quite expensive for me.
So I want to know, is there a way to recover that password. Its not windows user password so I guess file might be different from what we call SAM (I came to know about it while I was searching for solution to my problem). But for sure its stored somewhere in my computer. Please help me recover it.
Many many thanks in advance.
because i need to automate things....
58 views and still no reply... I guess people here don't love easy work.
But if anyone among you have the same problem, I got a solution.
The solution is:
Public Sub ImportTextFile(Fname As String, Sep As String)
Dim RowNdx As Long
Dim ColNdx As Integer
Dim TempVal As Variant
Dim WholeLine As String
Dim Pos As Integer
Dim NextPos As Integer
Dim SaveColNdx As Integer
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
'On Error GoTo EndMacro:
SaveColNdx = ActiveCell.Column
RowNdx = ActiveCell.Row
Open Fname For Input Access Read As #1
While Not EOF(1)
Line Input #1, WholeLine
If Right(WholeLine, 1) <> Sep Then
WholeLine = WholeLine & Sep
End If
ColNdx = SaveColNdx
Pos = 1
NextPos = InStr(Pos, WholeLine, Sep)
While NextPos >= 1
TempVal = Mid(WholeLine, Pos, NextPos - Pos)
Cells(RowNdx, ColNdx).Value = TempVal
Pos = NextPos + 1
ColNdx = ColNdx + 1
NextPos = InStr(Pos, WholeLine, Sep)
Wend
RowNdx = RowNdx + 1
Wend
End Sub
Then use this subroutine into importData
after you get a file name and a separator.
But now I am stuck at "how to make graph in PowerPoint using data in excel?".
Any suggestions (though I haven't searched a lot on this, I hope to find a solution my self, will compare to yours if I find it myself)
Hello guys
I am a newbie so please don't freak if you find this question stupid or easy
I have some data in CSV format, which I want to bring into Excel, and based on that data, I have to create graphs in PowerPoint.
I searched on Google and everywhere I find complex techniques to bring data into data-bases using some ADO objects and something called RECORDSET.
I want to know if there is something simpler which brings data into excel only.
Here is the Code till now.
sub importData()
fileName = Application.GetOpenFilename("Text Files (*.csv),*.csv", , "Please selec text file (in .csv format)...")
If fileName = "False" Then Exit Sub [I]'User pressed Cancel on the open file dialog[/I]
End Sub
Next steps
save data from this file ( fileName
) in excel
create graph in PowerPoint.
Please provide guidance
Thanks
Gaurav
Thanks PhilliePhan

Hello guys
I gone through "read me first" for this section and seems that I can't do anything.
Here is the problem and the things I tried to solve my problem.
The first encounter with the virus was when I tried to start gtalk (4-5 days ago), and a window poped up saying 'select the program you want to use to open this file' (you all must be familiar with this msg, it comes when we try to open something windows doesn't recognize).
I inquired and got to know that my cousin brought some files from some internet cafe which
caused the problem. I still don't know what files he brought. I looked for suspicious looking programs and files so I found some unusual things some of which i remember.
Then i tried opening gtalk again and same msg. similarly with other programs. I downloaded an open source antivirus from www.clamwin.com and found that i can't even install anything.
I tried gtalk (and other programs) by right clicking …
