How important is live support when selecting hosting? Have you ever faced downtime and needed urgent help?

I can't speak of where the company is today but a few years ago we self hosted because we were a bunch of engineers.

Today you find folk that can't write any code and need A.I. or support from beginning to end. I truly don't know how folk get by without some self support.

There's a huge price difference between hosting packages and managed hosting packages, so this is definitely something to take into consideration when selecting a hosting provider. I would say the answer depends on how technical you are and how mission critical the website(s) you're looking to host are. For example, are you losing thousands of dollars for every minute of downtime?

I have always had James, our amazing systems admin who has always been on-call for emergencies. Therefore, I don't need a managed package, although I did use one during DaniWeb's peak years. We were paying for dedicated servers at the time, and I wanted to make sure I had the immediate support I needed for things that could only be handled on-site (e.g. RAM failure, etc.) Nowadays, we have our own servers that are colocated at a datacenter not too far from where James lives in Texas.
