Are you just asking for a compiler to start java off with in general? OracleJDK works fine on most platforms. If your looking for the source, most of it is here here (written in C/C++/Java). If this is for an assignment, there's no way you'll get away with handing that in.

I think compilers for new people if thats what he is looking for is something like Eclipse or Netbeats, I myself prefer Eclipse from those 2 but since I started using Linux lately I've been using Sublime text as text editor and execute my code in the terminal. Personally I think subline is just amazing, with a few minor glitches so to speak, as its being too smart in some moments :p

Slavi: according to the original post, (s)he is not looking for a compiler (nor an IDE), but is trying to write/create one. actually, is asking us to create it, so (s)he can hand it in as his/her solution to an assignment.
