I've done just about everything I can think of twice now.[IMG] Ihate posting you these HJT logs but they don't seem to be much good anyhow. anyway here's some notes I took whilst doing the lastest tries...

In safe mode the homepage does not reset to about:blank. Having said that there's no net connection.

CCleaner cleaned all addresses from the History includin this one which I never visited (as far as I know):
http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads? client=cu-pub-74780934
(there may have been more digits at the end but I couldn't get the window big enough. Anyway I went to the address (leaving off everything after pagead/) and i got the message "nothing to see here"... Bit scoobydoo, eh?

After completing all scan/removes in safe mode I went to check Internet Propertiesand the Home page was "http://hsremove.com/done.htm". After changing it to daniweb I rebooted and we're back to about:Blank again!!!

While in services.msc, I found NT LM Security Support Provider (NtLmSsp) was stopped. Has this got anything to do with it or am I getting paranoid as well as appoplectically desparate?

Excuse me while I go off and cry for a while

Go raibh maith agat agus slan go foile!

Can you post a hijackthis log taken immediately after a reboot and without removing anything from it please.

Ay up crunchie! Thanks for taking this on... I can only imagine how mind manglingly ridiculous I must seem... any way here it is...

P.s Out of manic appoplexy i had HJT fix the qqtask.exe last night (after backing it up on floppy just in case) Since then I checked it out with jotti and it seems to be legit. castlecops said it was spyware (different from Qqtask.exe) which is why I fixed it... Also it was knocking around in system32 which was a weird place for it to be apparently. However I've come to trust you guys so whatever you say goes.

Go raibh math agat!
(as they say round here)

While you're waiting to hear from Crunchie or one of the other experts, you could update HijackThis to the newest version, which is 1.98.2. Scan and then post that log. There is a possibility that it could pick up something that the version you are running might not. :)

Nice one ! I hadn't spotted that! I've got the new version but ran the old one by mistake. I must be going a bit gaga...

Have you noticed that home computing and religion have something in common? In both cases users blame themselves for product failure... :o

So! There it is Crunchie. Hope you can do your thang ;)

There is nothing at all in your log that indicates an A:B infection.
If you wish you can run the following tools to check deeper?

Download Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.

Can you please download this file from here:

Getservice.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad into this post.

Download this program.
http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe

Now open DllCompare.exe and click the "Run Locate.com" button.
Then click the "Compare" button (this will take a few minutes)
When it finishes click the "Make Log...." button.
save the log to desktop.

Next copy and paste the contents of the DllCompare log in your
reply.

Ay up, Crunchie... This things getting worse. Windows keeps crashing on shutdown and for some reason I couldn't get DaniWeb yesterday at all. Anyway, here's the getservice stuff:

...and for some reason I couldn't get DaniWeb yesterday at all.

I don't think that was a problem on your end- I was unable to reach the site for most of the day as well.

As for the rest of your post:

Crikey! I just don't have the time to munge through all that right now; hopefully crunchie will have time soon to give it a lookover. In the mean time though, have a look at the following site for an in-depth description of the numerous Windows services, including which services can be safely disabled under different circumstances/system configurations:

.

Erm, yeah, I know what you mean... I'm a total newbie grunt and I'm suspicious of just about everything now, and that's quite a huge pile of gwano to wade through... If Crunchie has the patience to work that lot out, I'll wait till s/he's ready.

O Crunchie, I throw myself upon thy mercy!

Go raibh maith agat agus slan abhaile!

I'll wait till s/he's ready.

That would be a "he".

Looks like a trip to windows updates is in order!!

Looks to me like dll compare has listed every dll file on your PC. There's no way I can go through 1,417 entries and pick out a baddie.
Saying that, I really do not think you have an A:B problem.
Do as Caperjack suggests for now and get service pack 1 for XP and IE.

Ay up! I'm sorry about the huge pile of dung dlls there...I know you must be a busy man... (thanks DMR for clueing me up there :o )

Anyway. I've updated every thing except SP2 (which some folk think is a bit suspect anyway) I've also done just about every cleanup and test recommendedand the dodgy search engine seems to have gone! The homepage still resets to about:blank after rebbot but with a blank page.

I'm taking this as a good sign, cranked up the security settings, installed scotty to patrol for any wierd happennings and I've given IE the sack in favour of Firefox.

I'm hoping that this will sort everything out so THANKS THANKS THANKS for all the hard work, patience and chilled vibes while you all sorted my life out!

I'm guessing that all of you do this for the craic (which baffles me more than the problems i've been having) so can you tell me how to send DaniWeb a Christmas present without using creditcard or internet? I'm feeling very dodgy about electronic money right now...

Thanks to DMR, Crunchie, Caperjack and all the behind the scenes folk who I just know are there. I think the wombat of happiness just rang my doorbell... Its good to know there's some froods out there who really know where their towels are...

The upgrade to SP2 has caused problems with certain hardware/software configurations, and for those people who decided to apply SP2 when their current XP installation has virus/spyware infections or other more general Windows "glitches".

The recommendations of being absolutely sure that your current install of XP is "squeaky-clean" before upgrading to SP2 are many and well founded. It's often suggested that you treat migrating to SP2 as the equivalent to instzalling an entirely new version of Windows.

Lol. Why be baffled? Most of us have probably asked the same question to ourselves, have come up with no reasonable answer whatsoever, but continue to do what we do.

OK, well... we certainly don't do it for the money; there is none- we're all volunteers. Is it just "for the craic", as you say, though? That's hard to answer- the word "craic" actually has no direct English translation, and even used in normal Irish conversation it can have deeper meanings (depending on context) than the literal definition of the word would indicate.

Personally, I don't think I could quite describe a stint here at DaniWeb as "great craic" per se (although we definitely do have a community of really great people here, it is still a lot of work), but I would definitely say that of a good seisiún at The Pough and Stars in San Francisco.

Please do that if you think that we have helped that much; I'm sure Dani (the site owner and admin) would really appreciate it. If you want to steer clear of online payment options, send your request via a Private Message to her or email her

Well of course. If we didn't, how the heck would we be able to fight:

Ay up! I'm back! Thanks for getting back... I PMed Dani as you sugested, nice one...

The only trouble I'm having now I've switched to Firefox is that WinPatrol pops up every 2 minutes telling me that my IE homepage has changed to About:Blank!!!!!!! The Bulls*** search engine is gone, no-one thinks I've got an about:blank problem so why is it doing this and how do I stop it? What if I leave it as A:B and just forget about it? I'll still have this nagging feeling that somewhere in the bowels of my puter there's a little thingy waiting to do something dodgy. Also, out of the blue when IE was closed, 53 blank windows suddenly popped up. What's all that about?

I know I'm looking like a basket case at this stage and apologies for taking up so much time but it would be good to put this to rest...

Go raibh maith agat!!!

To get to you home page with out going to the about blank one is to go to your homepage ,right clik on it and hit create short cut, this will create a shortcut on your desktop ,when you want to go on the net use this shortcut instead of the internet explorer icon!!

Hey dude,
Since you have been doing this for a while now... had you for any change been messing around with the advanced settings of spybot?... cux there is an option there that will lock the IE home page, if that is the case, is just a matter of changing it to whatever page you want or just disable it...
