I'm running 10.4.5 on my MAC Mini. I have tried to update to 10.4.6 many times with no luck, It goes to a normal end of job but afer rebooting the software release stays the same.

Any emails that were deleted now reappear as if it was the first time.
Any folders that were created before the boot dissapear.
Any other additions or updates also vanish.

How do I fix???? :-|
Thanks

Bob

That's odd.. where are you checking to see the OS version? Please post the results of (in the Terminal.app):

sw_vers

ProductName: Mac OS X
ProductVersion: 10.4.6
BuildVersion: 8I127

Have you tried directly downloading the patch and installing it?

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1046comboforppc.html

Please note, that's for the PPC version. Check the downloads site for the Intel version if that's what your Mac Mini is.

Thanks, but this did not work. I downloaded from this url for a PPC Mini and old files reappeared and new files are gone.

I check the software version from the About This Mac and get this:

Machine Name: Mac mini
Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.9f4

This is strange, I can't find terminal.app????

Thanks Bob

Disk utility ran fine. I repaired permissions.

Now to figure out the update problem. I was able to update my iBook with no problems.

You've never installed anything like RadMind or DeepFreeze, and this is your computer at home, not part of a school or job that might have locked the Mac into a kiosk-mode that always replaces any changes with a known good image at reboot?

OK, so your boot drive isn't full..

At this point your options are dwindling. Please open /Applications/Utilites/Console.app. Please download the above linked patch and try to install it. There should be entires in /var/log/install.log that deal with what is happening (or not happening).

I did not see a patch to download. ??

Yes, I have tried this with no luck.

Anyway, I need the results from /var/log/install.log

..

Just sent it to you
Bob

Not sure how to do that.Sorry.
Bob

Try updating the OS again and copy & paste into a reply the relevant info from /var/log/install.log and /var/log/system.log. If you sent one earlier I never got it, but there's some heavy anti-spam between me and the world, so posting it here would be best.

At least I got an error this time of a fatal install and to try and install again.! What does the reference to the device description mean??

Bob

Tryupdating saft too.. it's bitching quite a bit in your console log.

I appreciate your help, but were not making any progress. I did a re-install and updated all programs without a hitch. So far so good.

Tell me about SAFT??? What is it for?

Thanks again, Bob

Well, that would have been your next step. I have no idea what device was having the problem, some USB device you had plugged in. As for saft, I would hope you know what it is, as you installed it (it is not part of the defeault OS X install, it's a 3rd party application that you would have had to install).

More info about it: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20346
