Okay, i know i said i was leaving this thread, but think.. cwarn23, you are challenging the whole idea of pi... then why are you making a calculator that makes the "wrong" pi? or does this new calculator take into account how many "atoms" there are in the "circle" and spit out your new idea of pi?

Post 66 - You (at least at one point) had a theory that Pi didn't exist that got "slaughtered", so apparently your views very recently changed. Here's what I believe regarding pi:

1. It exists.
2. It's irrational.
3. Its length is infinite (see point 2 above).
4. It's equal to 3.14159...
5. None of the points above will change in the slightest if we discover that atoms, molecules, pixels, quarks, etc. are a different shape than we thought they were before.

If you agree with all the points above, then I think we all agree (I'm assuming everyone else agrees with the points above). If you don't agree with any of the points above, please point out which one(s) you don't agree with.

Those points are all correct and the reason - magnetic fields are rounded. So many of my first posts in this topic are inaccurate due to the lack of knowledge but after this discussion I see how pi exists just like every body else on earth says it exists. So could we talk about pi now because I'm hungry.

When dealing with random numbers, any and all possible number combinations are possible - including a million '6's in a row. Pi is now calculated to 2.3 trillion places and takes up a terabyte of storage to hold. Go ahead and search it for any combination of numbers you want.

Man this was a fun read though. I sympathize with cwarn, though... I tend to believe that "irrational" numbers in general have a weaker correspondence to "reality" - or physical reality, or God's reality, or whatever - than do, say, the integers and the rational numbers.

Not in the sense that the definitions of "irrational" numbers are inconsistent, or that it is impossible to reason about them logically, but in the sense that God created the integers and all the rest is the invention of man.

I suppose the real question, then, is whether there "exist" in a substantive sense integer numbers... I tend to think they probably do, but I admit that I don't have a particularly clear reason for thinking so. Some of the selfsame arguments against cwarn seem to shore up this belief tool; all real circles are just many-sided polygons, after all. And not necessarily regular ones at that.

Hunh? Bringing god into a discussion of numbers? Circles are not many-sided polygons; circles can be approximated by many-sided polygons but they are not the same thing. You are a math tutor and you try to bring god into math? Quit your tutoring as you are unable to separate knowledge from belief.

It is the ratio of circles Circumference to the diameter or it can be the ratio of area of a circle to square of its radius....

You can practically calculate it for yourself by taking a string of known length and making a perfect circle.Then calculate the diameter of the circle.once you have it, you already know the length which is equal to the circumference.

Divide them both and you will have the value of pi=(Circumference/Diameter).

That makes me wonder what is the Circumference and diameter of a perfect circle. Two numbers you can divide to get the infinit length of pi accurately.

There is not a perfect circumference and diameter - all circles and their associated diameters will give you pi (see proof here).

Pythagoras was a crackpot religious fanatic who stumbled onto mathematics as a way to prove the validity of his philosophy/religion. He discovered the mathematics of music by calculating the relationship of the length of stringed instruments and how they related to tones an octave apart. His math was such an integral part of his religion that an acolyte had to practice his teachings for years before they got to learn math. He believed in metempsychosis and so did not eat meat and his disdain for beans lead to his death. After his death, his followers hid pi because it was irrational.
