year 2020 computer specs

Hi, I thought I would ask "what do you think the average computer will be like in 2020?". I have read about Moors Law which says we should have 25.6GHz 32 core cpu with over 256GB of ram. But is this totally correct or are we expected to see more with some technological breakthroughs. If your interested post your guess of what your computer specs will be like in 2020.

Well, I was being somewhat serious. One of my favorite insights (I didn't invent it: I steal good ones when I find them...) is that "using a computer" is likely to be a lot like "using an electric motor" when computation becomes fully integrated into our society. You can imagine a guy saying he was "using an electric motor" when the whole idea of electric motors was new; but now you would just say "Did you close the garage door"? or "did you start the washing machine?", not "Did you use an electric motor to close the garage door" or "... wash the towels". In like manner, I believe that within "some" years, we will not talk about "doing computing" or "having a computer". Instead, our commonly used life tools will just be smarter than they are now. We will talk about "talking to" someone or "finding out" about something, without specifying that a computer was used ... because it won't be a "computer", it will be a "phone" or a "my pocket-tool" or whatever.

As for vegaseat's point: I doubt we will commonly implant anything smarter than an ID chip or maybe a "simple" communication device within the next 10 years, but I agree it is likely to happen 'some day'. (And I'm personally opposed to implanting anything with an ID: Too much like Nazi Germany for my taste. What I want is a keyboard that 'reads my mind' as to which key I meant to type!)

I agree with Frank. 2020 will be most probably home/work/social integrated systems that can not be reffered to as computers any more. a Few years back we used to say "Check your phone, I have send you a text message/sms". Now we just say, "check your messages, I've text-ed you. I'm sure the current school goers do not even know what a post office looks like or what its used for...LOL

Some nice gadgets from Melvin. In the movie "Gamer" for instance I do not think that we are that far away with motion controlled screens etc. Sony and Wii is already on par with their technologies. I just wonder if we will still talk about CPU power, RAM size's etc.

Hmm. Hoping by 2020 to have a fast reliable brain that doesn't hang, fall prey to fads or bigotry and which is clever enough to be reliably useful. A larger or at least better indexed memory would be good too

Ignoring moore's law, i think we are looking at 3.4 Terahertz, 128 cores, 4 Tb of RAM, 34 yottabyte HDD sitting on PATA 7 (300gb/s), not forgetting ATI Eyefinity version 56 (64 monitors).

By any chance would that be 64 one inch monitors. Because I can't see how I would be able to look at 64 twenty four inch monitors without standing back 32 meters. Then I would need a very long cable on my mouse and keyboard if I have one.

4TB of RAM... So much brute force hashing I could do with that. Doesn't compare with my puny 12GB of RAM for my current computer. And 34 yottabytes (10^15 GB) imagine how much porn people would be able to download to their computer. As for how I would fill my hard drive, I would download the internet as to internet is only about 2 yottabytes as of today (2010). The only thing is I would need a yottabit internet connection which means just after the NBN (National Broadband Network) lays the fiber optic cables they will probably have to lay out some new cables in 2020 to replace fiber optics with a yottabit connection to the average home user.

I wonder what the graphics would be like. 1TB of Graphics? My models would be able to render top university quality on the fly live. That would be soo coool! Then I could make games with brute force 3d lighting rendering effects. I wish somebody could just put me in a time captual for 10 years so I don't have to wait.

There will be no such thing as cables in 2020. Ways to charge batteries wirelessly are already in research and development. Could easily stick those "charging stations" into lampposts and at bus stops so that all you need to do is walk past close enough to charge your phone.
