For quick context: asked how to lighten photos, pointed to Photoshop, and the promotional post by is not relevant to the question. Below are practical, modern options and tips that fill the gap left by the replies.

Decide whether you need a global brightening (the whole image) or a local lift (faces, shadows, a small area). Global fixes are simple but can wash out highlights; local fixes preserve contrast and detail. Useful non-destructive approaches include working on a duplicate layer, using Levels or Curves to lift midtones, targeted shadow recovery tools, masked adjustment layers for specific areas, and using blend modes like Screen with reduced opacity for a subtle overall brighten.

If you do not have Photoshop, free and web-based tools work well. Try GIMP for a desktop free alternative or the browser-based Photopea for a Photoshop-like interface without installing anything. Both offer Levels/Curves, masks, dodge/burn tools, and scripting/batch options for multiple images. For quick fixes, phone editors and Pixlr-type editors can be enough.

Practical workflow and cautions: always work on a copy and check the histogram to avoid clipping highlights. Prefer RAW files when possible — they have more headroom for brightening. Use masks to protect bright areas (skies, speculars) and apply noise reduction if shadows get noisy after lifting. For batches, create an action (Photoshop) or script (GIMP/Photopea) rather than repeating manual steps. Subtle, layered adjustments give far better results than cranking a single slider.
