I have the above mentioned Laptop(yes, it is old) but i still like it, only problem is i have vertical lines appearing on the screen when it starts up and then it freezes and doesn't go any further. Any comments on this

Hi, I have seen this problem before on various HP DV series.
It looks like the GPU (graphics) is faulty. Its a very commen problem which literally thousands of people complaining about the same issue.
HP do not want to admit liability but have extended the warranties of some of the Dv9000 series to cover this problem so it would be an idea to check if yours is covered on the HP website.

Your options are:

Have the GPU reflowed ( not a permanent fix )

New Motherboard

Or hopefully

Get it repaired under Warranty.
