I just bought two gigs of RAM. However, when installed, upon startup, after the windows XP loading screen, my screen just goes black.
I checked online and apparently my motherboard supports a max of 2gb. I tried 1.5, using my old RAM, same result.

the new RAM= 2 sticks of samsung 1gb 1 module PC2700 333MHZ DDR 184-pin DIMM

Safemode doesn't work either, it sarts running some commands and shit then just freezes.

I have checked with other less technically inclined forums and they suggested it was due to my DRAM clock or something. Others say this wouldn't be enough to cause a black screen, but I attempted to change the DRAM clock anyway. I checked my BIOS menu by pressing del at startup and there was no option to change my DRAM clock or anything similar.. people have said they don't think that's the problem anyway. I have to put my old RAM back in to come on here for support because even safemode won't work.

what's the total amount of memory does your mobo support? it might support 2gb ddr but the maximum of memory that your mobo support might be up to 3gb only..double check your mobo manual..you might need to change some jumper settings also...

I can't help but think the RAM sticks weren't seated properly. You say your old RAM works... right? Try some different sticks of RAM. Did you get the RAM from a reputable source? Static electricity can render some RAM useless. I recommend that you get some new RAM.

The old RAM does work. I have no other sticks of ram to try, sadly :( I got it online, so there could have been static electricity on the way here or something, but I'm not stupid enough to do something like that myself.

You could try loading the 'optimised defaults' in the BIOS...

If you can't find a BIOS setting (like RAM timings) try pressing Control+F1, this will show an 'advanced' menu in some BIOS.

The fact that the website you linked says this:

FSB533 CPU is required in order to choose DDR333 selection in the BIOS setup

makes you think there's a way to change the RAM settings in the BIOS. I've never heard of a BIOS where you can't do this.

Sometimes the motherboard can't identify the RAM properly and you have to help it out by telling it the settings.

Oh yeah, I'm assuming your CPU has that 533FSB that they ask for (they come in 400FSB flavours as well) If you don't know, google and download 'cpuz' (it's free) and look in the bottom left hand corner of the first tab.

What is my mobo? the manufacturer of your mobo..open up your pc, normally there's a model name of the motherboard written there.. (Note: Do this if you are a hardware savy or else you end up with more problem)

This is very helpful, I didn't know about the ctrl+f1 menu, I'll try that. So you're saying that by telling my computer the settings of the RAM, even small (apparently insignificant) details like the RAM clock, it could fix the whole thing from not working?

ok ctrl+f1 didn't work, and when I go into the settings that are said to contain DRAM timing settings there is only AGP and on-chip settings. I press f1 for general help and it says press f10 for DRAM timer settings, but if I press f10 while general help is up, nothing happens. If I press f10 while general help isn't up, it asks me if I want to save and go.

That's pretty strange. I'd try pressing F10 on startup, rather than Delete (you may have to press the f-lock button first, it depends).

So there's no timing settings in the 'on-chip settings' menu?

F10 does nothing on startup, and I don't see any F-lock button on my keyboard.

All my on-chip settings menu has is AGP aperture size, on chip vga settings and on-chip frame buffer w/e.
f1 for general help says f10 will bring me to DRAM timings, but it does not.

Hmmm...

Check you motherboard manual for a jumper setting. There may be a physical jumper (pins) that you need to move from 'on' to 'off' or vice versa. Traditionally it's near the CPU, but I don't recall exactly (now days all settings are in the BIOS, but there used to be manual settings like this. It's worth a look).

Im nearly certain it's just bad RAM now though.

One last thing, you could try cleaning the RAM contacts (on the stick, not the mobo) with an eraser, then alcohol. Wait for the alcohol to evaporate.

You're probably right though. Call up the place you purchased from and get them to send you a new set.
