my cd writer dont recognize blank media

i have winxp,service pack2 . CD WRITER .HL-DTST CDRW GCE-8400B
when trying to drag files,folders from c;drive to e:drive..and ready to write to cd..i got a message "please use a writable cd or r-w" and i use all blank cd's.
i used to have roxio,with this program i can write to cd writer,but without it,not
it used to do this before write straight to cd-writer
any help please,thanks ina dvance

If you pop a blank CD in the burner, then wait a bit, do you get a dialogue box asking if you wish to open a writable folder?

What CD burning software do you have displayed in Add/Remove programs?

If you check Start > Run > msconfig, what CD related entries display in the 'Startup' list?

actually i don't install a cd burning program,i had roxio,esaycd creator,i bought the newest version#7 but it ask me to change dispaly to 1024x 768,whe i do it screen icons looks too small.i actually use 800x600. before getting roxio i had no problems [roxio is uninstalled]
writing cd's from windows explorer to my cd writer,
also see not cd related entries in the starup list

If you are sure that Roxio is successfully uninstalled, try this:

Right-click 'My Computer' and choose properties. On the Hardware tab, choose 'Device manager' Locate the entries for all CD drives and burners, right-click on them and choose Uninstall. Shut down your system, wait a few seconds, then boot it up again and allow the drives to be redetected and reinstalled by Windows.

no joy,"found hardware" was ok,,,,now when dragging a file to e:/ where cr-writer is have this message"E: is not accesible,INCORRECT FUNCTION"

Oh goodness. Enough with the 'thanks anyway'. You seem to give up rather easily. Step by step is the way to go :)

Check the properties for the drive and see if it shows up as a burner or simply as a CD-ROM. If it displays incorrectly, you'll find instructions for editing the registry to correct the problem in this article.

You could also try Microsoft's 'Autoplay repair wizard' to see if the problem is resolved. By the way, I have more resources available as well, so don't give up yet ;)

editing the registry either
cd-writer can paly but no record from windows explorer,still ask me to insert blank media and this is what i'm using

now when i inse a cd-r right click and selecting properties,file sytem=RAW

my pc came with roxio and like i said before i got th newest version [7.0] but that version ask me for a screen resolution of 1024xx i have 860xx now .before i could drag files to the cvd-writer...now it can't even write to c-writable discs.
let me ask you something,,does winxp,,come with a preloaded program to do this operation? maybe is that file what i need

Wrong! With Windows XP, you need only pop in a blank CD and the OS handles the job. A 'Writable CD folder' opens, and files can be dragg/dopped or copy/pasted to it. A Wizard handles all burning tasks when the user is happy with the folder contents.

acuariano, that is almost certainly a sopftware problem, rather than a hardware problem. Try a refresh install of Windows to see if it is corrected:

By the way, the problem most often occurs after Easy CD creator has been installed.

I have seen reminants of easy cd creator mess up several systems even after uninstalling it.

I dont have a link but several sites had info on how to clean out bits of EasyCD that can cause problems.

It even messed up one of my systems at one point.
I had a good backup so I just restored rather than edit the registry etc...

i believe that formatting is the best solution in solving OS problems, it's not the only solution though. But I only take reformatting into consideratoin when everything else fails. just my 2c.

I was having a similar problem so I took a look at the registry changes in your file. The only setting value different than my current registry values was the setting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]
"AutoRun"=dword:0000001

{mine was "AutoRun"=dword:0000000}

I believe this setting might have been turned off on my computer during the install of VMWare or Virtual PC 2004. The autorun feature on a host OS can apparently cause problems with Virtual Machines.

My computer has the same problem but I've downloaded the program and it still doesn't work!!! And it's driving me positively CRAZY!!! :mad: And, by the way, how do we reformat/reinstall a computer? My computer has 'stuffed up' several times and I always get my cousin to fix it but I feel embarrassed to have him keep coming over to my house and he works now so he doesn't have as much time. Unfortunately I don't have another computer to back this one up :sad: but if I ever do get one, how do we back up files on another computer???
