my daughter has an Acer Extensa 5620-4025 laptor computer that flashes briefly when I try to turn it on and then is dead. I tried refitting the battery and start it with and without the charger with identical results. Any clue of what may be happening ?

Is there an indicator light on the charger? Does it stay on? What happens when you remove the battery and try to boot without it?
