whats happening here is when i go to turn in the powerbook I get a really really long startupp screen with the spinning icon and the apple, and then it goes black and gives me a message about not being able to boot... any ideas.

The spinning wheel you're seeing is an attempt to preen the hard drive, which means it's makeing sure the disk and file structure are sane/functional. It's clearly failing. So it's highly likely your hard drive is failing.
You should boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility and attempt to repair the drive.
You also may find that you need a more robust disk utility such as Disk Warrior.
You ALSO may find that you need to replace your hard drive. When you use Disk Utility, select the disk (as a device, not the name of the disk) and check the bottom of the window in Disk Utility and look for "SMART Status". If it says anything except "verified" your hard drive is failing.
