A quick diagnosis and practical cleanup path based on the symptoms you posted (slow machine, "INVALID MENU HANDLE" when saving/opening attachments, and attachments disappearing when forwarding): this is most often caused by (a) a conflicting or broken shell/context‑menu extension, (b) leftover/rogue security software and startup bloat that intercepts browser/file actions, or (c) a browser/plugin problem. ’s HijackThis output and ’s note about updating HJT and Windows are on the right track — an updated scan and a service‑pack upgrade will make diagnosis far easier.

Recommended, ordered steps (do them carefully and back up important files first):

  1. Make a backup of documents/photos. If a deep clean is needed, copy those files to external media before removing anything.
  2. Update tools: install the newest HijackThis build, then run an up‑to‑date on‑demand anti‑malware scanner (second‑opinion tools such as Malwarebytes or a reputable scanner) in Safe Mode with Networking and remove any confirmed threats. Do not remove unknown entries blindly.
  3. Fix the context‑menu error: use a shell‑extension manager (ShellExView or equivalent) to disable non‑Microsoft “Context Menu” handlers, reboot, and test saving/opening attachments again. The “INVALID MENU HANDLE” message is a classic shell‑extension symptom.
  4. Test with a different browser (Firefox or Chrome) or a fresh browser profile to rule out a broken plugin/toolbar. Temporarily disable/uninstall extra toolbars, Google Desktop/Updaters and duplicate real‑time security products (running multiple resident AV/anti‑spyware products can conflict and slow the system).
  5. If problems persist, run System File Checker (sfc /scannow) to repair system DLLs (XP requires the install media), perform a clean boot (msconfig) to isolate startup items, and then produce an updated HijackThis/log for the next diagnostic pass.

Notes and cautions: do not attempt registry edits or manual deletions unless instructions are explicit; keep only one real‑time antivirus/firewall active; updating Windows to at least SP2 (SP3 if available) and applying browser security updates helps prevent reinfection.

You need to update HiJackThis and also why havent you updated to sp2??

post a new log up here after you update HiJackThis
