Short practical guide for the recurring Spybot "DSO Exploit" report (thread started by ; comments from and an offer from are noted).

When diagnosing a persistent detection, follow a careful, evidence‑first workflow:

  • Update tools and gather details. Ensure Spybot and its definition base are current, and record the exact scan line Spybot reports (the full file path or registry key).

  • If a file is reported, make a safe copy and produce a hash for independent checking. Example:

    certutil -hashfile "C:\path\to\suspect.exe" SHA1

Submit the hash or file to a multi‑engine scanner (VirusTotal) or scan it with reputable on‑demand tools (Malwarebytes, Microsoft Safety Scanner).

  • If a registry key is reported, export that key first (Regedit -> File -> Export). Use Sysinternals Autoruns and Process Explorer to locate any associated run entries, BHOs, or COM objects. Disable entries in Autoruns rather than immediately deleting them.

  • Cross‑check with at least two other scanners and inspect running processes. If independent tools find nothing and the system is fully patched, the entry is much more likely to be a false positive. If other scanners confirm malicious files, perform removals from Safe Mode, clean persistence with Autoruns, then re‑scan.

  • Always create a System Restore point and export affected registry keys before making changes. If something goes wrong, restore the registry or system restore point.

For troubleshooting by volunteers, the most useful information is the full Spybot scan line (exact path or registry key), a current HijackThis log or Autoruns output, and the file hash. This allows a focused, verifiable determination instead of assuming a benign or malicious cause.

If you are up to date on your windows security updates, then you can ignore it. It is a bug in Spybot.

but this happened for the first time!!!

i have been using spybot for 1.5 yrs !

I noticed you had another thread going where you had posted a hijackthis log, and you were told it is clean....so I would think that this would be the bug in spybot. You may want to wait and get a second opinion from one of the experts, but in most cases where DSO Exploit keeps showing up, it's the bug in spybot, as long as you are up to date on all of you security updates from Microsoft. Hopefully soon someone else will take a look at this thread and they can let you know for sure. Good luck! :)

Still need help Prakhar with DSO Exploit? I had the same issue and just learned how to fix it.
